Ohau and Maui Snorkel Tours

Hello Ladies,

H and I are heading to Ohau and Maui for our 1st anniversary in a few weeks. I'm looking for suggestions for snorkel sail/boat tours. There are so many online, any suggestions? Also any suggestions for good beaches with snorkeling would be appreciated!

Thanks!

We didn't take an organized snorkel tour in Maui, but we did go snorkeling at the Black Rock on Ka'anapali Beach almost every day. The Black Rock is right by the Sheraton at the north end of the beach. Swim around the first part where the rocks jet out and you'll hae some really great snorkeling. Be careful swimming around the next nub though, the current gets reallly strong on the other side. Sometimes the lifeguards come out on jet skis to clear you from that area.

  • I am doing the Pride of Maui snorkeling tour. Breakfast and lunch included, as well as an open bar!

  • Thanks ladies. I LOVE sea turtles so I'm super excited to see them in their natural environment. We are thinking of doing a snorkel trip with the pacific whale foundation on Maui as they have an education part of the trip which sounds interesting.
  • We went snorkeling at Molokini Turtle Town I think the boat was the Pride of Maui. It was AMAZING, we saw so many sea turtles!
  • I'd plan your snorkel day for one of your first days there. Last October I was in Maui and looking forward to snorkeling with sea turtles, but unfortunately due to some weather thing (I can't remember what), there were no sea turtle sightings.  The boat offered to transfer people's tours to two days later, but unfortunately we had planned our snorkel day for our second-to-last day of the vacation, so that wasn't an option.  Also, FYI, some of the boats require you to float on one of those pool noodles while snorkeling.  It's kind of a weird way to snorkel.

  • You don't necessarily need to do an organized tour for snorkeling.  I'd recommend purchasing the Oahu & Maui Revealed books, they usually have great recommendations for snorkeling spots that you can go to on your own, as PP mentioned, Black Rock is a great spot!  There are lots of places that you can rent snorkel gear from, but I like Snorkel Bob's because they actually take the time to fit you to a mask (which is important).  Also a tip: bring a travel sized bottle of Johnson's Baby Shampoo...wet your mask, put a drop on the inside of each lens and rub a bit, then rinse...it's a great defogger and WAY cheaper and more effective than the ones they sell in dive shops!

However, if you are up for trying something more than snorkeling, I recommend doing a discovery dive.  They usually give quick instruction and only go to about 30'.  My first trip to Hawaii, we did a beginners dive with Oahu Divers (this was before I'd ever even tried snorkeling).  I was nervous at first, but it was an amazing experience.  My H and I got certified when we got home and have been on several dive trips since, but that first dive was still by far our most exciting (we even got to snorkel with sharks on our surface interval (not as dangerous as it sounds)!)
