Invitation Wording (need opinions)

Hi everyone! I need your opinions on my invitation wording. The wedding is going to be a causal backayrd barbecue type wedding at my mom's house. Her and my FMIL are helping my FI pay for the wedding.

Invitation Wording:

It's a party
(With a wedding)

Together with their parents
(My name)
&
(FI Name)
request the pleasure of your company
for an evening of barbecue, dancing, and "I do"
Friday, the 13th of September
Two thousand and thirteen
at five o'clock in the afternoon
at the bride's childhood home
(address)

What do you guys think?

It's too informal for my taste. What about...

    Together with their parents
    BrideFirst Middle Last
    &
    GroomFirst Middle Last
request the pleasure of your company
as they are united in marriage
    Friday, the thirteenth of September
    two thousand and thirteen
    five o'clock

    123 Main Street
    Anytown, USA

Barbecue and dancing immediately following the ceremony
  • I can see your point but there seems to be no middle ground between wicked formal and wicked casual. As I said in my original post by wedding is going to be very laid back and I don't want my guests getting the wrong idea about my wedding. Also those more formal wordings so sound....impersonal...I want my wedding to be fun and random like my FI and I are, not stiff and traditional.
  • I'm going to agree with you LilGirlNic, I think it's an informal event and and informal wording on the invitation suits it. I like what you have, It's fun and cute but doesn't scream "Come to my redneck wedding and wear your best double denim y'all". To have the traditional formal wording for a backyard BBQ at a home would seem odd to me.

You can have a fun wedding while still using the traditional wording.

The purpose of your wedding invitation is to provide the logistical information of the occasion; in other words, the who, what, why, when, and where of it.  If you get too caught up in the "fun," "cute," "clever," "unique," "original," "romantic," "personal," etc. of it, then that information could get lost or be confused by the guests.

Use interesting fonts and graphics in your invitation, or use different cardstock.  That can convey the tone of the occasion.

But using "fun" or "random" wording could give the wrong impression to your guests about how seriously they should take your invitation.  Even if your wedding is meant to be "fun," it's still an event you want them to take seriously enough to show up on time and not blow off, come strolling in late, or otherwise treat in a way that suggests that it's okay for them not to give you the care and attention that you would want on your wedding day.

If you really insist, something like this COULD work. Though my opinion will be that traditional wording is really the appropriate thing to do.
