Wedding Party

Need a little bit of education on wedding party titles,,,

Ok, so, I feel a little dumb asking,
I of course just always thought there were bridesmaids and a maid of honor..
but Im seeing Matron of Honor, Matron of the Bride, Junior Bridesmaid, so on and so forth..
Could anyone whos super proficient in weddings perhaps take a few minutes and explain to me what all of these titles are and how they differ?
Im asking alot, but if anyone wouldnt mind haha
Thanks!

Re: Need a little bit of education on wedding party titles,,,

  • A matron of honor of brides matron are names to give married attendants. Some people want to call younger minor children "junior" bridesmaids or groomsmen. Personally I'm not a fan if the junior titles.
  • Maid of Honor - unmarried MOH
Matron of Honor - married MOH
Junior Bridesmaid - usually a young teenage/pre-teen bridesmaid who could really just be called a bridesmaid
Man of Honor - male alternative to maid of honor
Best Woman - female alternative to best man
Co-best man/Co-MOH - two BM or MOH rather than 1
Attendant - gender neutral term for wedding party members

Have never heard of matron of the bride.
  • ditto gottahave.  Groomswoman and Bridesman have also become more common - they are opposite gender bridesmaids or groomsmen.  then of course there are flower girls and ring bearers which are typically young children.

We had juniors - they were under 12 (8, 9, and 11).  I agree that it's dumb to call a 15+ a "junior"  but we used the term b/c they were children and their role did differ from the other BMs/GMs because they weren't in all the photos; they went to cocktail hour with their parents while we did outdoor photos and such.  It was an easier distinction to help say who we wanted in which photos. (we did some 'kid only' photos too, with the Jrs and FG/RB).
  • Tacking Jr. onto the title is stupid and redundant. It's like using a labler on your fruits in the fridge. No duh the oranges are oranges. Pointing it out is a waste of time. Although, I guess if you are afraid the men at wedding are easily confused and might try hitting on an 11 year old, it might be useful.
