cocktail hour

We are not going to have appetizers but late night snacks instead. Our ceremony will be at four and reception starts at 530 at a different location. So there will be plenty of time for people to stop or mother in law offered to host snacks at her place.   Do we have to have a full hour cocktail or can we do half-hour or 45 min. And eat around 6. My mom thinks we are crazy for not having appetizers and late night snack but it can get very expensive and thinks shortening cocktail hour is good idea. I have been to lots of weddings without appetizers  and  we don't need the extra time for pictures.

Re: cocktail hour

  • This sounds like a headache.

Skip the late night and host a cocktail hour with aps. Cheese & cracker and a veg tray are fine, but people need something to snack on while they wait.

I've heard of a lot of late night snacks going to waste because people have had dinner & cake and a couple drinks by then.
  • I'd definitely prefer a cocktail hour with snacks than late night snacks.  Very rarely do I ever stay until the end of a wedding.

We opted to skip late-night snacks because we felt fewer people would stay till the end vs. a great cocktail hour and reception menu, and instead we amped up our reception dessert menu with an ice cream sundae bar.  Honestly, I can't envision anyone but us being hungry (if we don't get to eat dinner much)...and we're having a big take-away bag from the caterers.  We're also offering an optional after party (not renting the venue, just providing location details) at a club a block away with amazing appetizers and drinks (if guests want to pay for them.)
  • You need to serve food with the alcohol at your cocktail hour.  Not everyone will drink and some people may have traveled for an hour or two before your ceremony and may be hungry.

  • skip the crazy trying-to-be-unique plan and do what's right for the guests. have a full cocktail hour with food (even if it's just cheese, crackers, veggie trays) or just go right to the dinner.
