Declining a Wedding Invitation-Gift?

Do you still send a gift?  We got an invitation for a wedding for a day on which we're already attending another wedding.  I went to the couple's registry online and sent them a gift, even though we cannot attend.  Do most people do this?  Just wondering if this is the norm, I always send something even if I cannot go.

Thanks!

  • A bulk of people I know do, but a gift is never required.

  • I don't unless I'm super close with them.

  • I'm getting married in a month, and some guests still sent a monetary gift when they declined our invitations...and I can say that I was truthfully shocked! It wasn't something that I was expecting or thought that people did, but I was so grateful for the sentiment. I really don't think it's necessary at all, but if you do choose to it's more than appreciated!
  • It depends on who they are.  A close friend/family that I would normally attend, but am missing the wedding because of schedule conflict?  Yes, I send a gift.

My cousin's 30-year-old daughter who I have never met and it's OOT for me?  Nope.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I had to back out of a wedding party because I couldn't afford to travel to the wedding (long story). I still bought a nice gift for my friends, especially since a super nice gift was only a fraction of the cost of the flight, hotel, and rental car.

Since it's not a requirement, I'd go with your gut. Do you feel like you'd be buying a gift purely out of obligation? Or because you were planning on getting a gift anyway and just can't make the wedding itself?
