Savory snack to go with champagne toast

I'm skipping hor d'oeuvres mainly because of budget reasons but also because the buffett will be served shortly after everyone gets to the reception.

I'm having my ceremony outside and will do a champagne toast at a pavillion next to the ceremony site.   Since there will be no hor d'oeuvres, any suggestions on something to snack on that is easy, to serve, cheap, and not messy?

I wouldn't wait until the toasts to feed everyone a snack. If you're having a cocktail hour you really should offer your guests something to eat while they're drinking. It seems odd to serve them a snack with the toast because usually people start eating as soon as the toasts are done. Just seems like a wasted effort since they're so close to eating dinner anyway, KWIM?

There are hors d'oeuvres you can do on a budget. A simple cheese and cured meat platter is fine, this is something very simple you can DIY the night before. Cheese and cured meat also pairs well with champagne because of the sweet/salty combo.

My cousin got married outside, and set up a little table with some cheese, crackers, grapes, figs, nuts etc to have with the juice and champagne, as a sort of cocktail hour while she had photos (she got married on a dried up river bed, with a cliff and vines on one side, it was so different and amazing).

It was just enough to have a little bite to eat with your drink. It was nice with the little extras, like the fresh figs and fresh walnuts to have with some nice local cheese, so felt a bit more special than your regular cheese and crackers. There may have been some fresh bread and ham too, for the hungry people. It was all help yourself, under a little tent, for a wedding of about 60 people. We then went to the reception venue and had chocolates, then proper toast followed by dinner.

Thanks! I think I will try a spruced up cheese and crackers!
