gift you wish you registered for

What's the one or two gifts you didn't register for that, after your wedding you wish you had?  Right now I'm playing with the idea of a NICE VACUUM, or artwork instead of other decor.

Re: gift you wish you registered for

  • That helps though! Thanks!

There are a lot of things I've realized would be really nice to have within the last year that we didn't think to register for when we got married.  Unfortunately, having moved on to other financial priorities means I'm aquiring them very slowly.  A lot of those things I wasn't used to seeing on registries and I didn't want to put too much in the $150+ range since I didn't anticipate much of our guest list shopping in that price range, or didn't seem useful that time based on the recipes we commonly used.

Some things on my current wishlist: a pretty cookbook stand that can be left out, stockpots, nice vacuum and carpet shampooer for dog hair/stains, stand mixer, cupcake carrier, more dry storage canisters, a larger mortar and pestle, a picnic basket that holds reusable plates and utensils, fireproof/waterproof box for important files, a wooden serving tray, some organizational things for kitchen & closet, frosting tips and pastry bags, oil mister so we can stop buying cans of PAM, a nice small cutting board that can be left out and used to serve cheeses.

Walk into a store or browse online.  What household items do you think would be useful and you would like to have?  Is there anything you have that you would love to upgrade, like a nicer food processor, knives or dishes?  If you go camping, are there things you would like at REI?  If you're looking at doing work on your house, register for tools you need at Sears.

ETA: We didn't register for decor because I had a feeling a lot of people who shopped off registry would get or make decorative items.  We ended up getting a decorative teapot, a painting, decorative napkin rings, etc. so I was glad we didn't register for decor.

@Sleeper where did you register for the home and garden items?
  • OP - Thanks for posting this. I have the same question. I have been browsing through like the weekly sale ads to see if there are any other things we need.
  • We have one registry, and it's on amazon.com.  I added the 'universal registy' feature to my work (hehe) and home computers, and when I thought of something we needed/wanted, I would go online ANYWHERE and presto- it would be on amazon's list. I could then sort by type (all linens or kitchen tools together, regardless of where they are from) by price, or by 'priority.' We have a 200 + item registry, and only about half are items from amazon.

We've got holiday decor (Halloween and Christmas), air freshner bulbs, battery-operated and scented candles, a fireproof safe, a programmable thermostat, a garage storage rack for lawn tools, a garage wall storage hook/shelf unit, wrapping paper and card sets for year-long gifts, board games, a beautiful desk Earth globe, cookbooks (about 15 - we like to cook with recipes from around the world), sheets, a new shower curtain, bathroom shelf, bathroom wall hook (shaped like a mermaid, from Haiti), flower bulbs and tubers for our garden, wine sets (reds and whites), a gourmet cheese set, two cakes (we can freeze and thaw for birthdays or dinner parties), a bunch of baking stuff (cookie cutters etc.), DVDs, patio unbrella for our patio set, picnic basket set, beach blankets, beach chairs, CD player alarm clock for our guest room, really beautiful gold-rimmed formal china set, rice cooker, pasta maker...

I don't think there is any brick and mortar store that we could have registered with which would be so easy to work with, or so comprehensive.  Highly recommend.  Plus, I know they ship fast and reliably, and have a great return policy.
  • I had a small wedding (42 guests), which = small registry.  Some items I would have registered for if I'd had the space: new dish towels, upgraded sheets, a floor lamp for the living room, and a new coffee maker (my Keurig is a first model and on its last legs).
  • Get a clipboard and walk through your house.  If you don't own a house yet, ask a friend if you can walk through theirs.

What's in each room that you don't have?

What do you see that you would love to have but wouldn't think of buying for yourself?

What do you have that you'd like to change or upgrade?

Do you need more quantities of anything (more sheet sets, towels...)?

You'll wind up with a list of all sorts of things you wouldn't think about or might miss otherwise.

What a great idea! I had no clue where to start and now I feel like I have a plan! Thanks!

I wish we had registered for a stand mixer.  I have my mother's, it's from 1982, and the thing won't die.  I thought we might have one person be that generous, so we skipped it since we have one, however old and battered.  Turns out we had several guests be that generous, and I would have preferred a stand mixer that can accommodate the modern attachments over our china teapot (don't get me wrong - the teapot is lovely too).  We have enough gift cards to buy it, and I still can't justify it because ours won't die.  So I wish we had registered for it and just left it to our guests to decide!

  • We were exceedingly practical with our registry, and I can tell you that this is the best way to go.

High quality vaccuum, carpet steam cleaner, mixer, etc.  Not glamorous, but when you need them, best items in the world.

    Great ideas.
  • Great question. As we all know, there are NO DO OVERS! I wish I had registered for a great set of pots and pans instead of the ones my mom wanted me to have. Also wish I had gotten a quality set of knives. The ones I had are so dull and don't sharpen right. I have since purchased the ones I wanted myself but both are things I could have used immediately. I love to cook. I received an inexpensive stand mixer that broke in the first year so I saved up for a kitchenaid that I treated myself to and love it!! Wish I had it much sooner.

If it's not on a registry to begin with no one will know what you truly want and need.

  • We were very lucky and received a lot of things off of our registry.  We have used the good china to host Thanksgiving already, and we are really happy with the Calphalon Tri-Ply pots and pans we received.  I would just try to pick things that will last a long time, and that aren't going to go out of style.

I think the only thing we didn't register for that I wish we did is a Chemex coffee maker (about $40).  Buying those K-cups all the time is expensive!  And I don't really like heating up the plastic either...
