Have a friend marry us? New York

My fiancé and I aren't religious and will not be having our ceremony in a church.  Instead it will be at our reception venue.  We have met with many officiants and haven't loved any of them.  We were thinking about having our close friend marry us instead of a professional.  Has anyone had experience with this in NY?  I have looked online and see you need to fall within certain requirements in order to legally marry a couple.  Any advice on this?

    [QUOTE]You need to check with your county clerk. The city of New York permits it, most of the surrounding counties don't. Within the city, your friend needs to get ordained (we used the Universal Life Church Monastery), register with city (minimal paperwork, around $15) and that's it.

    Thank you, we will actually be getting married in NY state not NYC.  I'll check with the county clerk.

    I just called the Saratoga County Clerk, and she told me that she believed it to be a State matter.  She said they have received this question before and they (county attorneys) didn't have an answer for it.  Hmmmm.....now what?

    Please come back with an update.  I am interested to hear what your county has to say.
