Book lover? Tattoo fan? Click here...

I am a bookworm, have 2 tattoos, and was just saying to FI that I am done, don't care for any more ink.  Then I came across this and I might just change my mind.  Tattoos inspired by some of the most amazing books ever written, thought I'd share because I know there are a bunch of fellow bookworms and tattoo lovers that haunt this page.  I love the Gatsby and Giving Tree tattoos...

  • I LOVE literary tattoos. I haven't figured what I want to get yet, but I am definitely planning on getting some sort of literary tattoo at some point.

  • Those made me super happy. I believe I'll be getting the fox from The Little Prince, as it does mean a great deal to me outside of just the literary love. I'm pretty pleased with myself that I knew a great many of them. I love the Gatsy, the Velveteen Rabbit.. those are all awesome. I approve :)

  • I'd do either "9 3/4", the sign of the Deathly Hallows, or "Don't Panic" if I didn't have a morbid fear of needles, pain, or never being employed because of tattoos.
  • Wow I love a lot of those.  There are so many great ones I would never know which one to choose.

I love a lot of those. Personally I've been toying with the idea of getting The White Tree of Gondor tattooed on me somewhere. I'm just not sure on placement, or if I'm ready for the type of nerd commitment that symbolizes.

I also want to get a movie-inspired tattoo. The feather from Forrest Gump. I walked down the aisle to the theme from that movie. I like the symbolism of the feather a lot (not all feathers, just that feather).

Hey, I never claimed it was rational.
  • Normally I don't just love Shakespeare, but my definite favorite was the one from The Tempest (#47 I think). If would add some quotes/elements of Cyrano de Bergerac, Much Ado About Nothing, and *maybe* from Flowers for Algernon - nothing specific comes to mind right now, but I remember them being full of awesome lines.
  • @KeptinStitches:  You'll never have an issue with tattoos if you're in IT, unless you're in Executive Management at the C level, but even then, if you can cover with long sleeves, I'd say it's fine.  I wear skirts on occasion, so you can see my tattoo on my ankle, it's never been an issue.  My company employs some of the best InfoSec minds in the world, and one of our female engineers rocks full sleeves and a blue flat top.

As for the pain?  Yeah, it hurts.  I'm a wuss, though.

I could go on about the fear of needles & how it doesn't equate to tattoos, but the pain is a good reason... but the employment part? That's a bit extreme (unless you have a super conservative job, I suppose).

Not to shoot down your idea *at all*, but you saying that reminded me. I have a huge scar on my thigh from removing a tumor about 7 years ago. I hate hate hate it and was really interested in getting it covered, even just incorporating it into a thigh-covering tattoo, rather than be completely filled it.

I went so far as to go to the tattoo artist to get the design drawn, explain what I want, etc. He looked at the depth/width of my scar and told me 1. It will fade very very quickly (like within a year) and 2. It would be incredibly painful. I told him I already had 5, how bad could it be? He said that he tattood a grown man with a full sleeve/neck tattoos, etc. over a scar about the size of mine and the man made him stop because he was crying so badly. Another tattoo artist told me just about as much. ;-; So if you choose to do it, maybe if yours is much thinner it will work for you, but I don't want you to get your hopes up and not have it feasible :(

sorry to be the debbie downer....

  • Eh, I'm in a super-conservative part of the country in a highly male-dominated field. Call me paranoid, I'll own it.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Book lover? Tattoo fan? Click here... : I'm glad you brought this up!  My scars are small thin lines, about 1/2 cm long so maybe if that was in the loop part of the ribbon where there would be no ink?

I bet you'd be just fine then <3 You can always make your loop a little bigger or something. Mine is just huge and ugly.

    Bold = Love!

Also, I don't have much more to contribute to this discussion.  While I love books, and enjoy seeing what other people come up with for tattoos, I have never come across anything that meant enough that I would "wear it" forever.

I love it! I'm dying for a sleeve/half sleeve/anything on my arm, really. I'm a gigantic Beatles fan, and I love the little burst on top of the 'i' :)

  • I read Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" at a really weird part of my life and for some odd reason I really connected with the book. That summer I got the phrase: "Nolite te bastardes carborundorum" aka don't let the bastards grind you down tattooed on my back.

I still love the book and everytime I get discouraged, annoyed, whatever I just think to myself: "don't let the bastards grind you down"

  • I love those. I want a blue lotus, with a quote from Harry potter and a lamplight going down my right side. Bri, you should come down and visit when I get it!!
  • I double majored in English and Religion (Specialization in Islam, Judaism, and Religion in America) in college.  I would consider getting a literary tattoo...or a religious inspired tattoo.

Particularly, I like this quote from the "To Be or Not to Be" speech from Hamlet:

"For in that sleep of Death what dreams may come..."

And this one, from Tennyson's "In Memoriam":

"Calm and deep peace in this wide air, These leaves that redden to the fall; And in my heart, if calm at all, If any calm, a calm despair".

I realize that those are sort of morbid quotes...but I feel like they are profound.

I also think "Magic, Science, and Religion" by Malinowski is a profound read.  To symbolize the points that I painstakingly learned in my Theoretical Approaches to Religion class, I'd use a traffic light tattoo.

    Or...I like this Arabic quote:

ليس الشديد بالصرعة؛ إنما الشديد الذي يملك نفسه عند الغضب

It means "The strong person is not the good wrestler. Rather, the strong person is the one who controls himself when he is angry." and was spoken by Muhammad.

In case it's not clear, yes, I am a closet nerd.

  • I love the Shel Silverstein tatoos...my dad used to read those books to us when we were kids so I have lots of fond memories of those books.

I don't have any tattoos... was tempted to get an a little angel when my grandmother passed and, again, tempted to get another little angel when my dad passed.  I'm still toying with the idea of getting them.
  • Not book related.. but I have a video game related tattoo!
  • I have the phrase "To world enough and time" on my shoulder. It's paraphrasing the first line in Andrew Marvells "To his coy mistress". But the way it's phrased on my shoulder is used in my favorite book The Time Travelers Wife. It's like using it as a toast. I love it. I am considering for my next tattoo either some song lyrics or a quote from To Kill a Mockingbird, which is another of my favorites. Probably tied for first.
