Professional Name Change

We are getting married in October of 2014. I am an educator, and the school I work at starts in August. I plan on taking his last name.

Should I start having my students call me Mrs. in August, should I wait until after the wedding and have them call me Mrs. or should they just call me Miss the entire year, and the next years class will call me Mrs?

I haven't spoken with my building principal yet about this, because I honestly don't know how to address it. I wanted a few opinions on what other people thought would work best.

Don't use your married name until you are actually married. I had several teachers get married during the school year, it was NBD to switch over after they got married. Yes sometimes we accidentally used the wrong name but it wasn't that big of a problem.

  • Don't have them call you your new name until you have a new name. It's weird at first, but the kids will probably actually like using the new name and the transition will be easy. My students were all kinds of happy to start using my new name after I got married during the school year. My former students, however, refuse to call me by anything but the name they new me as. Hahaha!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I got married in the middle of the school year and waited until the next school year to change my name in school.  Most of the kids that have known me for a while still call me by my maiden name so I answer to both.

  • When I was in grade school one of my teachers married mid-year.  We never really had a problem switching from Miss Oldlastname to Mrs. Newlastname; it wasn't confusing or anything.
  • I work in a school as a counselor, so have kids in every grade.  It's funny b/c my juniors and seniors sometimes still call me by my maiden name but my freshmen and sophomores only know my married name, except those that have older siblings and sometimes use both names.  Anyway, just wait until you're married and then switch over.
  • Thank you all! I actually spoke with my building principal about this, and he said that once I get my name changed on my license, he wants me to start having the students call me by that name.
