Wedding Invitations & Paper

Is sending a Save the Date card even neccessary?

I'm really confused about wedding invitations and save the dates and it really confuses me can anyone tell me if Save the Date cards are even neccessary? I'm having a fairly meduim-sized wedding at a church and then doing the reception some other place where there will be more room to spread out and dance.

Re: Is sending a Save the Date card even neccessary?

  • Nope.  We didn't do them either.  Yeah, they're nice, but it's the first thing we cut out of our budget because it's just an added expense.  Plus, our guest list wasn't finalized yet and needed more time to sort that out.  STDs are good for destination weddings and for OOT guests who need time more time to plan, but no, they're not necessary.

This is what we did.  We started gathering addresses about 4-5 months out.  When we asked people for their addresses, we took that time to tell them that we're inviting them to our wedding, and also told them the date and town it was in.  This way we've given a heads up to everyone.  It's worked out well so far!
  • We also didn't send them out. Not only did it save money, of course, but our reason was that our wedding will be fairly casual and almost entirely family who already knew about it. We just didn't feel they were necessary in our case. However - since the wedding will be out of state for almost all the guests and they'll need to make travel arrangements - we did send our invitations out slightly earlier than most people on TK recommend, about the 9-10 week mark.
