Suggest a Fad - Any Fad ...

Okay folks. I'm sick of being stalled; I'm sick of being negative. I need to see something. Anything. So I'm open to suggestions.

What are your suggestions to jump start this thing? Like I said earlier, obviously my body KNOWS how to maintain ... so now I need to do something drastic. I've been stuck on this miserable plateau for a year.

Suggestions???

ETA: I don't mean pills or wraps...

Here's the lowdown:

I am 38 years old.  (this is where you gush about how young I look - lol)
5'4
I've been fluctuating between 156-158, and carry my weight on my stomach. My legs and arms are muscular, so I don't expect to be 110lbs. I'd be delighted with 140, which is the upper end for my height.

What really bothers me is that I lost 40lbs when I ended my marriage, got through a nasty depression, started and ended an abusive relationship, supported my kids and myself and put myself through school while living WAY below the poverty line and not receiving any assistance (other than my student loans and grants - I couldn't afford tuition otherwise), and met FI and started a new career in a new place. Why the hell can't I do THIS?!?!!?

  • Don't know if this is what you're looking for, but...

I've lost 50 pounds since October by eating most of my calories at one big lunch.  Dinner is tiny (100-300 cal.)

I can cut more calories if I'm satisfied once a day.  I can afford calore-rich fun stuff at lunch if the other meals are tiny.  I can stand being hungry at bedtime if I know I only have to last until tomorrow noon.

Conventional diets leave me perpetually unsatisfied, unable to treat myself, and don't last the week.  This violates almost every traditional rule about diets...but it's working.

I'm 5'0", still 240 lbs, and carry a lot of that weight in my stomach.  (Well, really I carry it everywhere, but you know.)  I have a slow metabolism, low activity level, and a love for food that means I cheat a lot, but it's still working.

  • Thanks Raptor - how many calories do you typically eat in a day? I've heard of people having success with this before, but not spoken to anyone.

Xcaly, I thought I'd have a harder time giving up grains than I have. I don't eat them often anyway, but since I've discovered my intolerance I've been having so little. What about fruit? How does that fit - or does it?

  • Thanks - I'll do that.

And ftr, I don't consider primal a fad either. It does sound like something that I could do though... Time to research!

  • Probably not at all what you want to hear, but I've read a bunch of stuff on how diet pops and artificial sweeteners actually make our bodies hold on to more fat and can stall weight loss.  I know for me giving up my last diet pop at lunch was brutal, but once I did my body started losing, which it hadn't been doing for years!!  May or may not be an option for you but just thought I'd add that in case it could help!
  • Thanks choagie!

I've heard that too, and my plan has been to transition from regular to the Max (I can't drink the full-on diet stuff, it gives me a headache). and I think I've been successful, because now regular pepsi tastes really sweet and I don't get the same satisfaction. I also don't like the other stuff as much, so I'm not tempted to drink more of it.

Overall, I know I should get rid of all of it and drink more water. Right now, I'm drinking a green tea (it does have a sweetener in it, but again, working on that. The fact that I'm even drinking the tea is a big deal. I don't do tea. Or didn't - I'm starting to be a tea snob.lol)

Maybe I'll go from one a day to one every other day, and ween myself that way. Cold turkey doesn't work for me, the headaches are brutal.

Glad to hear that it worked for you. I'm going to have to go there too. It's great that our schools don't have soft drinks - I'd have to make a conscious effort to bring one, and I always bring my water bottle instead, so that's been a big help already.

I'm ready to make it happen. I have three months from today - eep!

  • I did South Beach about 8 years ago and did see a loss with it, but I think primal would probably be a better option for mixing up your diet.

I also like the idea of switching up when you eat and how much at each meal. It looks like you do many smaller meals throughout the day...it's possible you could make your metabolism work harder if you stick to 3 meals throughout the day, or just 2 big ones?

Whatever you do, I'd say make sure you stick with it for 2 weeks (unless you're getting severe side effects of course!) to see if it's actually making an impact.

    Goodluck Jenny!

yeah, this is one of the contradictory things. Some people say 5-6 small meals, some say 2 or 3 bigger ones. Now that I think about it, I was eating 2-3 when I lost weight in the beginning. I switched to more when upping my calories after I stopped losing.

Thanks - that might also be an option!

  • Jenny - unfortunately everyones bodies work differently. What works for a majority might not work for you! While it might make sense to eat lots of small meals throughout the day so you're never starving, it's possible that your metabolism works at a pace where it hasn't finished processing what you just ate an hour ago and you're already feeding it more....or...something like that.

If you were finding success with 3 bigger meals before, definitely try going back! I tend to do the 3 bigger meals concept because I feel more satisfied with the meals when they're bigger (I think it's probably just a mental thing for me though).

  • I agree. And the only reason I switched in the first place was because I was stalled and trying to mix it up. Now that I'm eating smaller meals, I find that I'm not really satisfied. I think I will switch back to having fewer, larger ones and see if that helps. I know that on days we go out, I'm much more satisfied because the meal is larger than something I'd have made myself...

    Hmmm...

See? That's why this is an awesome place to hang out. This never occured to me until now!

  • Another vote for primal here! Been eating this way since August 2011. Lost 25 pounds in 5 months (while going to crossfit 3 days/week) and have maintained that weight loss since with not much work. I do splurge occasionally on pizza or nachos or mexican, but at least 80-90% of the time I'm primal.

Oh and don't worry about how many meals to eat per day. With primal I don't measure or count a single thing. I eat when I'm hungry, until I'm full and my body just figures it out.
  • Thanks ladies!

I'm trying not to give up, so this fresh perspective is totally what I need.
