Wedding Woes

Need opinions, PLEASE HELP!!!

I was born, raised, and live in Ohio.  My fiance and I want an Ohio marriage license.  However, we found the perfect place to have the ceremony and reception in Kentucky.  We therefore decided to get the license and sign in Ohio, but still have the ceremony in Kentucky.  When my father found out about this he was furious.  He said that it was entirely too much money to spend on a "fake wedding".

I'm not getting married until 10-12-14, so I have plenty of time, but I just wanted other opinions.  Am I in the wrong here?  Am I "crazy" as he says for wanting an Ohio marriage license, but holding a ceremony in Kentucky?  Should I change my plans?

I would really appreciate any and all opinions.  Thanks!

I may be wrong, but I believe you have to get your license in the same state you're wed. You need to check the laws there.

you need a license from the state you will be married in. if you get a KY license, it is only valid in KY. an OH license is valid in OH.

i really don't have much to say about how your dad feels. i am not sure what you mean by fake wedding, and all of that. but i do agree - it's strange to me that  there are people who have the secret wedding ceremony and then go through all the rigamarole for the follow up wedding, ceremony and all. i'm just assuming abou tit all because i have no idea what you and your dad talked about. just get the license for the state you're being married in.

  • You have to get the marriage license in the state where you're getting married. If you want an Ohio license, then get married in Ohio. If you want to have the wedding at the venue you found in Kentucky, then get married in Kentucky.

Your father is right; it's ridiculous to have a "fake wedding." A wedding, by definition, is a legal ceremony that unites two people in the legal construct of marriage. If you do that in Ohio, you are legally married, and the PPD you're planning in Kentucky is unnecessary.

What's so special about an Ohio license?
  • Why do you care what state it's in?

I'm probably the most relaxed etiquette person on here and I think I'd be pretty pissed if I found out the wedding I attended was the "fake" one so that you could have an Ohio license.

Well at any wedding you are not witnessing an actual marriage. The ceremony doesn't make you married the paperwork does.

This is all so odd.  Going to get the paperwork does not make you married.  Someone needs to be authorized to sign the paperwork after you saw your vows.

I have an Ohio license, it isn't made of chocolate or gold so I really don't know why the state is so important to the op.

  • Yes darling and usually the paperwork is signed after the ceremony you see.  With the best man/woman as witnesses and the minister/judge as the person who married you.  I betcha if you look at people's WEDDING pictures, you see a lot of those pictures.

No one is going to validate your desire here, no matter what you say.  We'll be validating your father, b/c he's right.

I'd still like to know why the Ohio license.

"Officiants: Authorization to solemnize marriages in Ohio is issued by Secretary of State’s office to any ordained or licensed minister of any religious society or congregation requesting the license.Valid: License is valid for 60 days. The license can only be used within the State of Ohio."
    http://www.usmarriagelaws.com/search/united_states/ohio/

"You need to obtain a marriage license from your county clerk and pay the clerk a fee. As long as you and your spouse meet the requirements, discussed below, your marriage license should be granted. You can then proceed with your ceremony. After the ceremony, whoever officiated your wedding has the duty of filing your marriage certificate with the applicable recording agency in your county."

So you get a license from Ohio and an officiant , authorized from from the state of Ohio, get them to Kentucky, and have the ceremony there  -  the signing of the papers, which is your actual wedding. Then have officiant back to Ohio within the time allowed to file . It wouldn't be fake, because you'll be signing the real papers with a real officiant and real withnesses.
Or at lest that's how I understand it. You can be in  space when you sign . Your officiant has a number of days to file the paperwork. They don't file on the same day anyway.

It's a fucking license.  The only people that will look at it is your insurance company.  Well, cable asked for it too, but they suck and I said no.
  • This is so weird.  What's so special about an Ohio marriage license?

I don't think they plan on using the OH license in KY, i think they actually want to be married in the state of OH for whatever reason. the KY wedding would just be the bells and whistles, not the legal marriage ceremony. IMO, then you get married in OH. i don't get  it, but the OP disappeared and didn't explain the reason.

if there is a problem with KY, then why get married there at all.

I'd say the 'important' part is that people who don't like 'fake' weddings (who share your dad's opinion) are fairly common.
And marriages are a matter of public record.

So how much headache are you willing to take to get the right state on your license?
(I'm imagining a giant paperwork SNAFU)
