NFP, very random question

Our premarital counseling (the online version, which has been going on for a month and has two more left) just got into contraception studies.  I've read a few posts on it, and it seems like every single type includes adhesives.  (I literally cringe when I see the "s" word...like what teachers put on children's homework.)  Quite literally, I have a phobia of all things adhesive, specifically the "s" word items.  I can't even touch them, and if I see them, I can't eat for a while because I feel like I can taste it.  Suuuper weird I know.

The question is, is there ANY other way to chart?  Online program?  It took me until my late teens to be able to touch stamps even, and I to this day cannot put the registration on my own car.

  • They use stamps. If you don't want to put stamps on, color it in, or use acronyms like "GB" for Green baby.
  • haha, it took me forever to figure out what "S" stood for (i was thinking Sperm since we're talking charting/fluids).

i use sympto-thermal which just requires pencil and paper or an app like Fertilty Friend.

I'd think that you can find an alternative to recording your data with ANY of the NFP methods.
  • I chart the billings method through nfpcharting.org, haven't used an 's' since my first chart. I just enter the info through an app on my cell phone or when I'm on the computer.

  • As other have mentioned before, there are programs where you can chart online or a phone app.  I use the Creighton NFP method, and use the app "Charting App" for charting when I'm traveling since it's easier than bringing the whole paper chart.  Alternatively, instead of using the stamps you could just color in each section - right now, I'm out of yellow stamps so I color in those days with a yellow sharpie... super high tech :)
  • I use Creighton with the "S"s... but I've also been using the free Kindara app on my iTouch to note the fertility observations and also track stuff like temperature (if I'm motivated enough), headaches, medications taken, etc.  I might start going the "coloring in" route because I'm cheap and don't want to pay for stickers all the time!  I use up charts way faster than the average lady...  If you prefer, you can always make your future husband do the charting if using "S"s :-)  Granted... I tried this with my husband while we were still engaged and semi-long distance, didn't work too well because he always forgot to ask me what to record on the chart.
  • First, as others have said, sympto-thermal methods won't require S-s at all. Second, again as others have said, you can certainly use other methods (coloring, apps, etc.) to record your data. I frequently run out of Ss, and just use a colored pencil. Third, I would really, really strongly encourage you to get your FI involved in the charting. Write down your own observations, but have him put Ss or color or something. I think having him involved, if at all possible, is essential and will facilitate the communication necessary to get him on board. In our case, it also forced my H to really learn the rules, which also keeps me from feeling like a gatekeeper, which can be a problem in the long-term.

I thought S was for sticky at first -- so funny! Not your phobia, what all of us though S stood for. :)

  • haha, yup, I thought "s" was a description for mucus...

  • Haha, it took me reading the replies to figure out what you meant.

As previously mentioned, there's tons of apps for the various methods.  If you use Billings, you can use ovulationmentor.org, which records your info and places the "s's" for you.

  • At first I thought you meant "smiley face"...I was trying to think of what a teacher puts on h/w, and my teachers used to draw a smiley face if you got an A.  Then I thought "satisfactory???"  But that didn't make sense either.  I don't know...I guess my brain REALLY isn't working today lol.

Other than that, I have nothing new to add to the conversation...PP have said it all!

  • Yep to all the above. For billings I used the adhesive-things-that-shall-not-be-named for the first couple of charts and then switched to the symbols you can use instead. Symbols are usually glossed over in the training, but you can certainly ask an instructor to focus on the symbols instead if you'd prefer them. Otherwise as others have said, online or charting apps obviously require no adhesives :)

  • Thank you!  I know it's weird, but we all have our quirks : )

We JUST started reading about it, and honestly I'm not sold but I think there's a lot more material we will be introduced to during the counseling to learn more.

  • If you mean you're not sold on NFP, I strongly recommend taking a class outside of your marriage prep course (or reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility).  Sadly, a lot of marriage preps just gloss over NFP and don't do a great job of explaining it.  I don't even remember mentioning NFP at our engaged encounter.  Your course seems pretty detailed, though!

Or both. :) Seriously, read the book to get a scientific view on things, then take a class to really learn and have someone to troubleshoot problems with. Any of the modern methods is highly effective.

  • I've recently started using Creighton, and I love it.  But then again, I love using the "S"s.  (And yeah, it took me a while to figure out what the heck you were talking about too.)  There's definitely ways around that.  Just grab a few crayons and have at it!  If you're interested in NFP, don't let that stop you!
  • I would recommend Sympto-Thermal Method with Couple to Couple League.  No stamps or stickers.  Pen & paper.  They just came out with phone app.  We have our last class tonight.
  • omg heather said STICKERS!!!!!!!!!!!  alayna, are you ok?  still breathing??   :-)~
