A clumsy eater worries

So, everyone I've asked this says, "Honey you won't barely eat a thing at your own reception!" but I'm still going to ask anyhow: am I the only spaz desperately worried about spilling food on my dress? I'm clumsy in the best of times, and this won't be my shining hour for grace, I'm sure, with all the excitement. And while I doubt I'll pack away a seven course meal, even a few bites of our sit-down dinner (and for health reasons, I do have to eat SOMETHING or I'll spend the rest of my evening feeling very unwell) could get me into spillage trouble. I'm not exaggerating, I'm a nightware with a fork in my hand.

What to do? My FH says I shouldn't be ashamed to drape a nice white linen napkin as a bib. Honestly, he's got a point -- better that than walk around with food on my dress the rest of the reception, right? But would that be a huge faux pas, though? Has anyone else worried about this, or is it just me?

  • I've seen brides use table clothes as drop cloths for their food. Honestly, if I saw that in a regular restaurant, I'd be like WTF, but a bride at her reception gets a free pass to drape herself with at least napkins IMO.

Whew. Okay, so it wouldn't be ridiculously bad then -- relieved!

No, I'll try to eat non-drippy things, but I'm just that girl -- the one who always spills something on a brand-new top. It's like a curse. :)

One of my friends is making me a "bib" to cover my dress. I am big chested and clumsy so I can end up with food on my chest. They even call it "Pulling a C", so she's going to put on the "bib" So she doesn't pull a C on her dress. I thought it was funny and it's much appreciated!

Ahaha, I didn't even think about this. I am such a messy eater. We clear the table after a meal, and my section is full of sauce, noodles, you name it, haha. I'm glad this was brought up, so I'll remember to bring a cloth napkin to drape over my lap. I might even tuck one in as a bib, you know! Could make for some cute photos.
  • I'm so glad to read these posts.  I thought that wearing a bib or napkin draped over your chest would be a big faux pas.  So glad to hear that so many brides have done/will do it!

I'm also a very messy/prone to spilling eater.  Honestly, I get self conscious eating in front of people I'm not close to, so I'm not sure how much eating I will actually do.  Fortunately, it's not pasta or barbecue (not that there's anything wrong with that).

[QUOTE]Do you already have your dress? Mine was three pieces. The dress, a lace vest and a cummerbund. I could have taken off the vest while eating, if anything spilled down the front it could have been be covered by the vest.

I might actually do this because my dress is two pieces.  The dress, with a lace button-back bolero over it.  I suppose the bolero would cover most of any spills on my bodice.

  • Great question... I'm so glad you asked this.  I'm more worried about drinking than eating though.  I spill beverages all the time.  I'm kind of tempted to get something like this to drink out of, but I feel like I'd look silly, haha.  http://www.amazon.com/Copco-Sierra-24-Ounce-Tumbler-Royal/dp/B003H9NITQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1368311324&sr=8-4&keywords=to+go+cup
  • I own one of those Copco tumblers! You should totally use it. :) Great idea.

Thanks, ladies. I was all nervous to even ask, for fear of the answer, but you've put my mind at ease... FH says he'll wear a "bib" too, so that even if it feels silly, we can be silly together... which we like to do. :)

  • Food tends to find itself on me as we'll, whether its crumbs or sauce, so I was considering draping a clear garbage bag over myself to eat lol.

    Ditto!

I'm sure I could talk FI into wear a bib with me as well if I ask him.

  • My mother had totally planned to drape an extra tablecloth over me at our reception (had the wedding happened), in order to 'protect her investment' (i.e., the dress).  I am incapable of eating anything without wearing it.  As a result, I'm a champion stain-remover. :P
  • OP, thank you for bringing this up. I had not thought about it, but I would much rather think about it now vs. in 10 months.

I think I'm going to ask our caterer for a few spare napkins, two for me (chest and lap) two for fiance (just in case).  Plus, you know, our normal 'wipe our faces' napkins.

    YAY napkins!

  • I'll go against the grain.  I wouldn't be caught dead with a napkin as a bib.  I sat at the table and ate very carefully while leaning over towards my plate.  No problems.   I was more worried about cocktail hour and regrettably didn't each much during that time.
  • A girlfriend of mine actaully wore a nice apron during the dinner because she is a messy eater too.  It looked really cute, and totally fit her personality because she is one fo those 'mama bear' women who lwas like a wife and mother long before she got married and had kids!

You can ask to have your food pre-cut.  It won't solve all the problems but could be a help.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re:A clumsy eater worries: Somewhere there is a photo of me in my wedding dress with a large Sonic cup. A friend actually went on a Sonic run because all of the cups at the venue were regular open tumblers and MOH wouldn't let me have anything but water in them. Keeping that dress white was his number one mission that day, lol.

My cousin had a guest trip and spill red wine down the front of her dress and then walk away as if it didn't happen. She was so cool about it - she laughed and kept dancing and didn't mention it to this guest until years later and she was laughing about it - and he screamed at her and stormed out of the room. Totally weird. But my cousin is my bridal role model.

    Awesome!
That's exactly what you should do.
The wedding dress is just a one day thing. In the end of the day it goes in a bag and in the back of your closet. It's not like you are going to wear it for your 2nd, 3rd , 4th , etc. weddings :)
You don't have to even clean it. Think of it as a "guest book" that everybody signed . 20 years from now you can pull it out of the closet and think " This beading came off when a brushed against aunt Sally's embellished purse . Dear old aunt Sally passes away soon after, but she was so sweet , all smiles at my wedding. It was the last time I saw her. "  .  " These spots are from little Lilly's kisses . She was eating her cake and suddenly turned and started hugging me and kissing me , and telling me that I am the most beautiful princess-bride ever. She was what ? 5? Wow, she just got her masters in finance last year. "  " The hem ripped off when I was dancing with Jake. He is such a good friend and has always been. And he is so supportive - he even danced at our wedding, when everybody knows that he never dances"  " My dear H. was so nervous - he spilled his glass of red wine all over the table and on my dress . Here. We still joke about that"  "At one point I was laughing so hard that I dropped a ravioli in my lap. Right here . And then we all started  laughing  even harder"
In the end it's not about how clean your dress is after the wedding, but how much fun you had, while wearing it.

Thanks, Stage. That's him all over. :) And you're right, I think we should make sure someone snaps a pic.

Advice is much appreciated. While I respect the opinion of a few dissenters, I'm glad I asked and feel sure that whatever we do, my FH and I will have fun with it, and that's the thing that really matters, after all.

I'm a fairly neat eater, but I definitely didn't drink any red wine until I changed out of my wedding dress. My only freakout moment came when a mosquito attack resulted in blood on my dress. Fortunately, my mom's best friend is amazing, hustled me into the bathroom, and got the stain right out.
