DJ or no DJ??? Need some advice!

My fiance and I are getting married on the beach this March. We're also holding the reception on the beach. There is no hard floor for dancing but I can't imagine having a wedding without the traditional first dance, father/daughter dance, and mother/son dance. But because there isn't an actually dance floor I feel like maybe music to set the mood is something we could handle on our own? Now that I'm saying that I feel like it's ridiculous, but I really am having a hard time convincing myself that a DJ makes sense for our set up... Any advice?

  • The reception is on the actual beach?  Not having a dance floor isn't going to keep people from dancing in an open space if you have the music.  Don't let the floor stop you.  People have been dancing on beaches since the dawn of time.  Fun stuff!

  • As a videographer / cinematographer ... I highly recommend hiring an outstanding DJ not only for musical vibe but for LIGHTING. Nowadays most good DJs have reception lighting that is VERY important for your wedding video (if you are having a wedding film made) plus the guests will have a better time with an experienced DJ and reception lighting for vibe. =)

  • I would contact some DJs and ask them their thoughts on how possible this is.  I'd much rather have a DJ than listen to an ipod.

[QUOTE]How is the DJ going to power his equipment?  Are there electrical connections?  I'm used to eastern beaches, so maybe this isn't a problem.

The place provides generators specifically for nighting and DJs and whatnot. So power isn't an issue.
  • I vote DJ - not just to have the music itself, but for his or her expertise in managing guests' mood and what they want to dance to, having an emcee, etc.
