Cross Post Question: Registering on Amazon

I also posted this in the registering board...but I'm hoping the etiquette ladies can help also.

(NO worries, I'm not going to ask about a honeymoon registry or any such nonsense)

I was wondering what your thoughts are on registering for one brick and mortar store (such as a Macy's or a Bed, Bath and Beyond) but also creating a registry on Amazon.com for the guests more apt to be "online shoppers"?

I know, personally, I do most of my own shopping via Amazon whenever possible because I have a prime membership and get free shipping.  I would be willing to bet that a lot of my friends/younger family members ALSO do a lot of their shopping online, not in physical stores.  The difference being with Amazon is that the registry isn't tied to one particular retailer...just a product/item.

I wouldn't put crazy items on the Amazon registry - it would be many of the same items that you'd see at a Macy's or BB&B (kitchen, linens, etc...standard registry items)

Would this be acceptable from an etiquette point of view to have one store be a brick and mortar and another be "online"?

Totally normal and okay. We had a Macy's registry and an Amazon registry. People bought things from both. The only thing people didn't buy much of is things we linked to on the universal Amazon registry. So the sheets from JCPenny that were on the Amazon registry, no one bought, and we got the wrong color JCPenny plates off the Amazon registry.

We registered at C&B, Amazon and Etsy. Nothing has been purchased from the latter two yet (and because fewer people are familiar with Etsy than with Amazon, I don't expect much to be purchased from Etsy) but there's nothing wrong with registering online. Some people prefer to buy the gifts online and have them shipped to the couple - it's pretty convenient.

I had a Macy's registry, and about 75% of the purchases were made online anyway, so I think having Macy's, BBB, etc people will still have an online shopping option.

But there's nothing wrong with also having an Amazon registry. I've bought things from their registries before. I will caution, however, that the universal registry is not very user-friendly. H & I are both very internet-savvy and we did not think it was a very intuitive process. His older family members could not figure out how to use it and gave up. No issues with the items actually sold through Amazon itself though, just the items you have to purchase from a third party and then indicate as purchased on Amazon.

  • Nothing wrong with it.  We registered at BBB and Amazon (I too do most of my shopping on Amazon).  I will say though, the vast majority bought from our BBB registry.

Thanks ladies!  And I appreciate the information regarding the universal registry!

  • personally, I LOVE when people register on Amazon.  If you spend more than 25 bucks, you almost always get free shipping. When someone has an amazon registry, I almost always shop there.

Ditto. I LOVE Amazon registries, mostly because of the free shipping. Plus, shopping online means I don't have to make a trip to the post office. Even if someone registers at a brick-and-mortar store, I still go online and purchase the gift from the website. I hate errands. ;)
  • I would prefer someone to register on Amazon since I'm slightly obsessed with it and since I am a prime member and get free shipping

We did Macy's and Amazon. Our Macy's registry is almost empty, not one Amazon gift has been purchased!
  • We have three items on a Bloomingdale's registry and the rest are on Amazon.  The amazon stuff comprises about 50%, the other 50% are from the universal registry.   We have not sent our STD's, and nothing has been purchased off any registry yet.  Can't tell you how people will respond yet, but we selected it for several reasons:

    free or inexpensive shipping
    wide selection
gifts sent directly to us not (we hope) brought to the wedding
inexpensive products when we compared prices
one, comprehensive list made it easier for us to keep it organized and not select redundantly
