Backyard Bash on a Budget!!!

Although I joined the Knot years ago, I am finally coming upon my wedding! This September is the big day and we have gone back and forth on so many decisions. I am actually hoping to find solace in these forums as I have had no support or help from family or friends. I am hoping all you Knot Gals can help me with all these details that I have no one else to help with! :-/

My biggest problem currently is that we decided to just have a small reception in our backyard. The wedding itself is rather small, we invited close family onl. So we did choose a nice ceremony venue and ensured that our ceremony will be gorgeous but we are slimming down on the reception stuff. So I need ideas on how to make my backyard bash look and feel like a great wedding reception and not just a family barbecue! lol

We have planted new flowers and other backyard type stuff to make the backyard itself kept and in good-condition but I am conflicted on everything else What type of menu should I serve? I don't want to break my wallet but I don't want to get sub sandwiches either! I am also looking for decor ideas for the backyard. Little additives to help make it seem very classy and romantic, like a wedding. I appreciate anyone's help or input!! It's crunch time so for the next few months, I will be that crazy wedding lady! ;-)

Thank you to anyone who can help!

[QUOTE]In Response to Backyard Bash on a Budget!!! : You shouldn't need support from family or friends.  Do you mean money?  Lots of brides pay for their own weddings. Pasta or Mexican food is budget friendly.  So is barbecue.  You can get potato salad and coleslaw from the grocery store.  Sheet cake does fine for a wedding cake.  Have a cooler with beer and sodas, and maybe box wine.

No, I don't mean money. We are paying for everything ourselves but that isn't the issue. I am more referring to general support for the planning part and I guess I had expectations for a few people to be more involved than they are. In the end, it's about my fiance' and I so I just want to make it as lovely as possible for us and the people celebrating with us. Thanks for your suggestions!

[QUOTE]My wedding cost less than a thousand dollars.  Fifty guests in the backyard.   We wanted to start our life together in the home where we’d be living. Dress from David's Bridal - $99 Silk shirt and pants for him, bought on clearance after Christmas Table and chair rental - $200 Drinks in iced party tubs - $80 Partyware and tiki torches, Party City - $85 Barbecue from local restaurant - just under $500 satin and lace album, eBay - $5 Music, CDs we mixed ourselves - $0 Flowers, growing out of the ground - $0 We went to Kinko's and bought some pretty stationery (lesss than $5) and selected a nice font on the printer.  We invited everyone to a "backyard barbecue in celebration of our marriage" with "shoes optional" at the bottom to indicate it was super-informal.  The wedding party were his kids, in their own clothes and barefoot. We set up the volleyball and croquet sets.  The guests loved the casual, informal atmosphere and it was a great party.  We still got a wedding for very little money.

planning support? huh? please dont take this as snarky but your wedding isnt nearly as important to anyone as it is to you and FI. you want to get married? you and FI do the work.
anyway-what's your budget? can you have a or a few local restaurants cater to your house-set up etc.... have a gardener come in a spruce it up a bit? rent tent(s) and table(s) and chairs?
