Engagement Gifts & Monograms

Hi all!

I was wondering if it is considered in bad taste to gift monogrammed items to a newly engaged couple with their new set of initials.  Is it too early and better later for a wedding gift or other gifts after they've tied the knot?

Thank you in advance!  I couldn't find anything on this by a simple Google search!

    I don't think it matters if it's an engagement gift or a wedding gift; so you're fine there.

    As PPs have mentioned the feeling on monogrammed items are hit or miss.  We received a welcome mat with our last initial on it and a door knocker with our last name that I loved (we bought a house about a month before we tied the knot).  Monogrammed towels or robes would sit in my closet and never be used.  As long as you think they'll legitimately love / use the gift I think it's fine to do it for an engagement gift.

     I would wait to see if its an item they register for.  Not everyone likes monogrammed stuff so I would not buy something with a monogram unless I knew for sure they wanted it.

    I like the monogrammed hand towels at Bed Bath and Beyond.  Those might be a safer bet since they would be easy enough to return.

    I don't think its okay to give monogramed gifts at the engagement party.  They don't share a name yet! To me, its like using a monogram on your wedding invites- not. yours. yet.  I think they're fine for wedding gifts, but not engagement ones.

    Yeah, if you want to I suppose there's nothing really saying you can't, but I personally would find it slightly awkward, since I wouldn't want to use it until after the wedding (and for us, that was a year and a half after our engagement). A long time for something to be sitting around unused.

    I received tons of monogrammed items for my engagement.  The towels and that kind of stuff I probably will never use because I am not really into that; however, we did receive champagne flutes customized with our three letter monogram which are to be used at our wedding and I love them.  It really depends on what it is you plan to monogram and what the person's tastes are.
