Deadliest Catch, anyone?

Does anyone watch Deadliest Catch? I am completely obsessed. It's gotten to the point of being emotionally involved ( was SO happy for Edgar when he got to be captain!) Love Keith, love Sig, neutral on Wild Bill, and I can't stand Junior and I really can't stand Elliot.

Re: Deadliest Catch, anyone?

  • We watch it on and off.  Usually binge watch it on a weekend.  I want to read the book the Harris boys wrote about Captain Phil.

  • No. And I won't since one of my cousin's was up on a boat in that fleet and they knew a storm was coming and they stayed out and he got seriouly injured and could have lost his life.

That's awful :-( I can imagine it's a whole different story when you have a personal connection.

I keep going back and forth between wanting to read it because I want to know everything, and wanting to boycott it because I have heard it's kind of exploitative. I suppose I'll have to read it to make up my own mind.
  • I watch it, but less so now that Phil is gone. :(

Not to sound or be insensitive, but did he not realize that could be a good possibility when he went up there? I mean the show stemmed from the Dangerous Job series.

There is a big difference when they are out and  storm hits and when the KNOW a storm is coming and staying out and throwing more pots.

That's true. It is a dangerous job by nature but the captains also have a responsibility to keep their crew safe and not take stupid risks. One of the reasons I can't stand Elliot is that he tried to stay out during a bad storm (when all the other captains hunkered down) and had to be ordered by the boat's owner to back off. Plus he's just a giant d-bag.

I know I loved Phil :-( I bawled my eyes out when he died.
  • I LOVE this show!!!  "Deadliest Catch" and "The Walking Dead" are my favorites.  The only time I watch network is during the Olympics.

I hate Elliott. He's a swaggering little Nazi who endangers his crew and his ship.

I loved Phil, too.  His passing broke my heart.   He caught Jake stealing his meds only hours before his stroke, blew up at him, then hugged him and promised to stand by him through rehab.... He was a loving father, a loyal friend, a fabulous captain and a great fisherman.

Don't like Keith much, but his tribute to Phil - sending a thousand-dollar-pot loaded with crab over the side "So Phil will always have one to come back to," was priceless.

If only all of us could be so well loved and remembered when we're gone.
I agree with all of this! I remember Keith doing that...now that I think about it, that might be why I started to like him in the first place. I also really respected how he handled the emergency with Chris (the greenhorn who had to be airlifted by the Coast Guard).
  • DH actually has it on right now because all of our shows are now on hiatus.

DC drinking game: drink every time Elliot mentions that he owns his own boat.

ETA: Ah I forgot the Hillstrands! Love them too.
  • That was cool, too.....especially the grace with letting him wee on his crab table!  There's no dignity in a moment like that, but somehow Keith held onto it for him anyway.
    Literally.

If they decided not to film Elliot and his boat any more, I'd probably like the show even more.

I agree with that too. Unfortunately I think they keep him on as the "villian" to keep ratings up. Nobody likes him.
  • I stopped watching after Phil died.  I should probably get back into it!
  • I don't watch it.
I guess i should be embarrassed of that fact since i work in Ballard, eat fish&chips at the Lockspot often and FI's son is good friends with Johnathan.

No. Being from Seattle makes you no more obligated to watch that show then it make you obligated to be a hipster.

    Salsera29 - Hey, they have the best fish&chips! :)

Not I my friend. I am chilling at work in my Yoga pants and running jacket! WOO!

  • I -love- DC!  Time Bandit ALL the way!  The Hillstrand boys are hysterical.  My FAVORITE was when they pranked Capt. Sig with the lanterns.

Screw Junior.  He's a douche.  I don't like Capt. Keith; he's far to volatile and I'm ambivalent about Wild Bill.  Also, I can NOT believe stupid Elliot is back.  Who's dumb enough to get on his boat?!

I am SO happy Josh managed to buy the Cornelia Marie.  That made me cry with happiness.

And Jake...I wish he'd clean himself up.  He's been given SO many chances that it makes me sad to watch him spiral like he is.

Wait I don't remember the lanterns prank, what was that??

I think I heard somewhere that Josh bought the Cornelia Marie, but it isn't on the show yet, right?

Remember the scene when Phil was in the hospital, and the boys were in the hotel room fighting because Jake was high as a kite? Ugh that was awful :-(
  • The Time Bandit crew bought those chinese floating lanterns, the shut down all lights and their tracking system on the boat, lit them and let them fly, knowing they were close to the Northwestern.

So, they cut to Capt. Sig talking to the camera crew, and he's talking along, then all of a sudden it's "WHAT IS THAT?!  WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!!!"  as he's looking out.  He's kind of freaking out about it, then suddenly the TB crew flips on all the lights and let Sig know they punked him.

It was EPIC!!  I laughed SO hard!!  It's one of my favorite clips!

    Here it is!

I happened to catch an episode a few weeks ago, and I caught out of the corner of my eye Josh talking to the Hillstrands and thanking them, and telling them as well as the camera crew he'd bought the CM.

Honestly, I wasn't actively watching DC when Capt. Phil died, but I'm slowly watching the episodes on Netflix, and I've seen it since his death, and it's so hard to watch.

This show is so addicting!  :)
  • "What the hell is that???  Is that a chopper????"

    LOVE IT!
  • @shaylagirl thanks for posting the link! Somehow I missed that it was hilarious! Although I did feel kind of bad for Sig he sounded very upset...poor guy haha.
