XP - NER - Nacho Bar or Snow Cones

I know we have a little over a year before our wedding, but just recently after looking over our budget we had to cut out having a DJ and a sit down dinner. We were originally set the time of the ceremony to be 5:30, but since we aren't able to have dinner, we are going to have the ceremony at 2:30. It will be the middle of June where the ceremony will be outdoors and the reception will be inside.

We were considering either having a snack nacho bar or snow cones. I called the snow cone vendor and she is already booking up into next summer because she's the only vendor around here. I can put a deposit down and if we change our minds and get the deposit back as long as we cancel within two months of the date. So this leads to my question.

Hot(80s to 90s) June day wedding. Assuming guests will have eating lunch, would you prefer snow cones(50 different flavors) or a nacho bar(chips, cheese, meat, sour cream, and salsa.)?

Thanks for your input!

Re: XP - NER - Nacho Bar or Snow Cones

  • I'm torn. Initially, I wanted to say nachos b/c I just really don't think snow cones are all that great, but since it's going to be 80-90 degrees, I may not want hot nachos.

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I'm torn, but I'd go with nachos. It's more filling. You'll be in an air conditioned venue so the snow cones might not be as refreshing as if the reception were outside. My answer also depends on the type of snow cone.....are we talking finely shaved ice practically drowning in yummy juice (like the consistency of actual snow) or are we talking the little balls of ice molded into a ball like at a carnival? I don't think anyone is wild about the latter.
  • I'm confused. Is this the only thing you're offering for food? If it is, I would say nachos since some people might be hungry. If not, then I'd go for snow cones since it'll be hot.

I thought refreshing from coming outside to inside.. they'd stop by the trailer set up and grab one on the way in or whatever works out. And it is the finely shaved ice drowning in yummy juice.. they are the BEST snow cones I've ever had!!

Since we are switching to a non-meal time wedding it would be either snow cones or nachos and then cake/cupcakes.

I'll have cake too Addie. From lurking I have seen you like cake!

  • I'd go with nachos, but then again, I hate snow cones and love nachos.  What type of cheese are you using for the nachos though?  Are you using real cheese or that gooey liquid cheese that gets plopped on top?  I love nachos, but I know a lot of people (myself included) are put off by the liquidy cheese and won't eat the nachos with it.  Oh dang, now I'm hungry for nachos!

    I too enjoy cake :)

Hey!  I like you!   With the new information, I definitely vote for nachos. It will provide more food. Snow cones are not filling in the least.

I hadn't really thought farther than just what normal stuff comes on the nachos. What kind of cheese would you suggest. I know they have the stuff like you get at the movie theaters or there's Velvetta which could be basically the same thing, or there is shredded.

All the nacho lovers.. what kind of cheese is best?

  • Mmm nachos...I love the fake cheese with nachos.

  • Fake or Velveta works for me!

Nachos with cake sound a lot better than snow cones with cake indoors. If it was outdoors with 80-90 degree temps than I would be tempted with the snow cones.

  • Nachos, definitely.  As for the cheese, I would have gooey and shredded available if possible.

  • I'm in the minority here, but I'd go with sno-cones and (if it works for your venue/budget) maybe some DIY snacks like fruit, cheese/crackers, veggies that provide a more substantial option. Liquid cheese - delicious as it is - sounds hot and messy for a 90 degree afternoon.

  • I say nachos, because if I went to a wedding and there was only snow cones and cake, I'd leave early because no matter what time, I'd be hungry within a couple hours.

Thanks for letting me know that, because if you feel this way, I'm sure a lot of other people would feel this way too. If we do end up going with snow cones I will make sure that we can afford to have other munchies out as well. :)

  • Nachos

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.

  • I would only be happy with the snow cone if it was spiked with some liquor.

I would go with the nachos because then you aren't only providing something filling but you will also be balancing out the sweet (cake) with a savory.

As for the nachos I would have a build your own bar: chips cheese (fake or velveeta works the best), toppings to include salsa, olives, tomatos, sour cream, guac, beef, chicken, beans, jalapenos, etc

  • I vote nachos.

Our location is dry :( lol! We fell in love with it though so we just decided it would have to do.

My FI is going to be so happy by all these votes for nachos! He liked both ideas, but he liked the nachos better.

Another question: Would you rather assemble all the nachos onto a plate, or would you want a bowl to create a "dip" and have an individual bag of tortilla chips(ratio of two bags to every one person) from Sam's Club? We were thinking the latter would be less messy.

You ladies rock with all your response, FYI. Thanks so much!!

Edited: because I can't seem to spell.. might still have problems lol!

  • I wouldn't mind some mess because that just goes along with nachos and IMO dipping the chips into a mixture just doesn't give it the same taste as if everything was piled on top.  But then again I am weird like that .

Even with all that said, I think the majority of your guests would prefer your second idea of a bowl and bags of chips for dipping.

  • mmmm nachos.  I would probably do a plate b/c it would be hard to really mix all the nacho toppings into a 'dip' and then I'd have to mess with a bowl and a bag.  I think they'll be on the messy side regardless..

I might just have plates and bowls and some hefty napkins out so everyone can decide their best move. Thanks for all the advice. It really has helped think this all through!

Now I'm off to catch a few Z's. Didn't sleep well last night. I hope I don't dream about nachos and spilling them on my wedding dress haha!
