Dress/body type

Getting hitched next May and I have never really been a dress girl, at least not since I was about six. Its not that I don't like looking feminine, just always been a bit of a tomboy. I have looked through tons of wedding sites to try to find a dress type that would suit me so I have some idea of what I am looking for before going to any boutique. However unlike most sites predict I don't seem to fall into one of the shape categories. I am 5'4'' have full hips a small bust but very broad shoulders. Not an hourglass not a pear but something in the middle. And its not really my thing since most dresses I have tried on leave me looking either broad shouldered or overemphasize my hips. Just want to know if anyone knows what kind of dress style would work for me.

I am 5'4" with a similar shape, though maybe a little closer to hourglass. I do have the broad shoulders, though, so I feel you there. I wore cap sleeves and a sweetheart neckline with an A-line skirt.

  • I also have broad shoulders - i just tried to find a dress that i tried on that i loved as it hit my trouble spot - my tummy - with rouching.

I'm also a tomboy - the dress I'm talking about had a halter strap on it with some beading on the halter and a beaded T strap in the back. the halter top seemed to help actually even me out and the rouching in the body helped to conceal my tummy. sorry i can't find the pic :(

i'm also a little more of an athletic build so my shoulders are broad and well toned so i'm not sure how this style would look on other body types that are more feminine?

best bet - tell the consultant your concerns and they'll work with you - you'll have it narrowed down in no time
  • i would say go strapless. u have broad shoulders so if u wear a strap it will draw the eye up to your shoulders and make the broad-ness more noticeable. i think if u go with an Aline or a ball gown that way it will just look like its the dress and not your hips so they wont be over emphasized. maybe a more dropped waist ball gown. so it hides your hips but the poof doesn't make your hips look big either. i hope this helps a little!

    What about your waist?
When you stand in front of the mirror, do your shoulders and hips appear to be  the same width? Which is wider?
Broad shoulders and broad hips, if they are about the same , when looking straight at the mirror,  make you an "hourglass",  if your waist is visibly smaller than your shoulders and your hips.
It's the width of your shoulders , not your breasts , that make the hourglas shape.

You might be a "wider hourglass" , but still  "perfect"  :)
Besides , wide shoulders, especially if you are tonned, make you look athletic  , which is good, and also make your waist look thinner , which is also good.

Also , it might help you choosing dresses, if you try to figure out which celebrity has your body type, or parts of your body  . Those people work with a lot of designers and you can find a lot of pictures in different outfits. If you like something on a person with similar body type, you might like it on yourself too.
