Might have a dress - need opinions.

It was a little early to go dress shopping, but my two sisters, mom, and I were actually in the same city for once so we went. I think I may have found my dress, but it's strapless, which is not what I really wanted going in. But I really love the lace and the fit - and the price! It was actually the very first dress I tried on, and when I put it back on at the end of the day, my family had the same (great) reaction without realizing it was the first dress. I'm just nervous about the neckline before I pull the trigger.

What do you think of the dress? Do you think there could be alterations to add straps/ cap sleeves? The lace is so intricate, I'm not sure it would work.

    I think you look stunning!

Im not too sure about alterations as far as adding straps or cap sleeves I would speak with the person who does the alterations at the salon to see if its doable.

I personally wouldnt add anything as I think the dress looks fabulous on you, and you have a great figure.
  • That dress looks gorgeous on you!

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

    Absolutely gorgeous! I wouldn't change a thing.

  • If your concerned about being to riskay you could add a bolaro. Also a skilled seamstress shoukd be able to add at least spaghetti straps but matching the lace to make cap sleeves or straps will be hard and costly. It looks really good on you
  • I think the dress is amazing and it loooks gorgeous on you.

What are your concerns about the lack of sleeves?  Is it because you always envisioned wearing sleeves or is it because you want to be more covered?

If it is because you always envisioned sleeves you aren't the first bride to fall in love with a dress that didn't match your vision.  I always wanted a slim, all lace, cut out back and sleeves.  What I ended up falling in love with was not that at all.

If it is because you want to be more covered I would think about a bolero or ask the store whether or not additional lace can be purchased to make cap sleeves.

IMO, I would leave the dress the way it is because it is fabulous.

  • Thank you all for your kind words! :)

It's not really a coverage issue, more just a "this is how I envisioned my dress" issue. But I think you're right, Maggie. I just need to realize that if I love it, I love it.

  • I think everything about it is gorgeous! The fit is amazing on you, I love the lace, and the neckline is so beautiful - extremely flattering and feminine.  Since it's not a coverage issue, I also vote to leave the dress alone - because of the intricate lace, altering it could be tricky.
  • I love the dress. And what a great story the first dress you put on!
i think it would be easy to add straps it depends on what kind. If you take it someone good they will have tons of good ideas! Also depending on when you are getting married you could always add a sweater or little something over your shoulders. I have also seen thicker vail to cover shoulders.
  • A good seamstress could always add sleeves or straps.  Or if you don't want to go that route, get a bolero.  Love the dress!  You did a great job picking it out!
I want a love like Johnny & June!
  • Beautiful dress. It looks great on you.
  • It looks stunning on you.
  • The lace in that dress is incredible! You look great.

  • It is beautiful!  I really like it with the sash.  I tried on one strapless lace gown, and they did say the designer could add cap sleeves that matched.  It was a Casablanca though, and they are known for their ability to customize.  You might be able to purchase lace that is similar to the dress from the designer?

It is perfect just the way it is, though.

  • I think the strapless looks absolutely fabulous on you. I wouldn't change a thing. Just know that if you pull the trigger now you should be prepared to not look any more--not even in magazines or online. Just to avoid dress regret

  • It is gorgeous!  I did not think I would want a strapless dress either, but fell in love with a strapless casablanca.  Strapless dresses usually just do not offer enough support but bridal is so different- my dress fits like a glove and the strapless is not an issue whatsoever.

Although its strapless it looks like it covers you well and I would think with alterations you could see options to add a strap or cap sleeve if you are uncomfortable- but it looks great as is IMO

If you have time then wait. It won't hurt. Go home, think about it and try on dresses again in a few weeks. If you still love it, it's the right dress, but maybe you'll find something else you like more. I originally thought I wanted a dress with straps too, but it's so hard to find dresses with straps, like 90% of them are strapless. But you can totally pull off strapless, I wouldn't let that turn you away form a dress.
