Re: How does this menu look? Need anything?

  • I think things generally look great, except you have very little for vegetarians and vegans.  Do you have any coming?  Even if you don't think any of your guests are veg, what about their SOs?

For the appetizers, I would see if the soup can be made vegetarian (veggie stock instead of chicken stock) and maybe have some potatoes without bacon.  I also think that some veggies and dip or crackers and cheese as stationary apps would be a nice addition.  I like being able to get something without having to stalk the waitstaff.

For dinner, can your caterer make some veggie pot pies?  That seems like the most logical vegetarian choice, and you could even have those be vegan.

If it's in the budget, I might add one other beer for people that might not like the Blue Moon pumpkin (I would like it, but I know not everyone loves Blue Moon and/or flavored beers).  You have plenty of drink options, so I don't think it's necessary, but it would be a nice extra.
  • i would also get something incase you have a vegeterian at the party. my cousins fi is a vegeterian and we always make sure at family events we have food that she can eat

Any way to have a meat option for the dinner without the carbs?

Like a sliced sirloin or ham or something?

  • I second @itzMS.  The only thing on your menu I could eat is the green beans.  Sounds tasty though!
  • Thanks for all the suggestions! We won't have any vegans and only one vegetarian (I asked) and she said she'd be happy with just some extra soup (it will be made with vegi stock) in place of the chicken pot pie. And I'll definitely have some of the potato cups without bacon. I might consider adding ham for the low carbers, although I don't think there will be any except for myself (and I was planning to just splurge). I will have a line on my RSVPs to fill in for any dietary restrictions guests might have.

Right, but chicken pot pie is very specific even if you aren't specifically "low carb". You can't ask for it without the crust or without the sauce or for just a small piece.

You can never go wrong with a plain meat option.

  • I suggest would adding a ham or other plain meat option like PPs said. Or you could do a fall pasta. It would give another option to those that don't want/can't eat the pot pie and it could be a great meatless option.

As an example: while my H isn't vegetarian or really picky but, he can't eat pot pie unless I make it. He has several food intolerances and allergies that make pot pie an issue. He can't eat peas (in a ton of pot pies) and some creams (that are the basis of the pot pie gravy sometimes.) Neither of us eat yams, so he would have green beans and bread for dinner plus a mashed potato app.

Other than that I think your menu sounds great.

  • I would be thrilled to see a roasted turkey breast carving station in addition to that.

I agree with PP about another beer option.  If you add a second beer I would suggest a light beer since they are usually very popular.  I also agree another entrée either a meat or pasta would be nice.  Most buffets that I have seen have a choice of at least 2 entrees.  Overall it sounds delicious and different than lots of wedding buffets in a good way.  I would love all of the food you have listed.
  • I think your menu is great minus the chicken pot pie.  I would not eat that.  I find them disgusting.  Roast turkey would be lovely.  I think you need some alternative to the pot pie for a main dish.

Agree.  I'm not a fan of pot pies.

Also, most buffets offer options.  Can you have a carving station and maybe a starch for the non-pot pie people?  Maybe roasted potatoes?
  • I LOVE the idea of the roasted turkey breast...I'll add that! Our starch is the mashed yams. Definitely plan to add another beer (or two) option...just haven't decided on what kind yet.

Not a fan of pot pies??? I can't wrap my brain around that, lol. Does it help that they are homemade and not those nasty frozen things at the grocery store?

I'm also going to add a cornucopia filled with fruit!

    Thanks for everyone's suggestions!!

This. Pot pies are gross. I wouldn't eat them and neither would my DH. I find it a little odd you chose this as your main dish, it being very specific and all. Can you at least add ham for those (and I'm guessing there would be a lot) guests that wouldn't eat a chicken pot pie.

oh dear, I chose the chicken pot pie because I wanted fall type comfort foods and I didn't want to do the same old chicken breast/prime rib options. I'm really surprised that so many people on here dislike them. Maybe it's a regional thing...it's cold and rainy here in Seattle in November and we like our comfort foods that time of year. I've had 3 caterer tastings and all of them made incredibly delicious pot pies. I promise they are not at all like the frozen ones. So far I've got really great feedback from my guests when I tell them about the menu. I'm definitely adding a roast turkey carving station (or maybe ham) for a second option and I thank those of you that suggested it!

I would eat a veggie pot pie! However, PP makes a good point about them mixing so many things and making it tricky for people with allergies. I like that your menu is different. I would just add another vegetarian app.
  • The truth is, you can't please every palette with just one entree, which is why adding a vegetarian option as well as the roast turkey is a great idea. I, however, happen to love pot pie, so you have my full support on that idea!

  • What about adding butternut squash ravioli?  That sticks with the fall theme and provides another entree option that is vegetarian friendly.

I am definitely on the pot pie side, although I don't eat meat, so chicken pot pie wouldn't work for me.  (On a related note, if anyone needs a vegan pot pie recipe, try http://megsvegrecipes.blogspot.com/2004/12/best-veggie-pot-pie.html.)

If you have the turkey carving station, I think you're fine!  People will have a choice, which is always preferable.   I would stick with turkey though and skip the ham (unless you plan on having both).
