Our best man and the dollar dance

Yesterday the klassy couple came over to our BBQ and were actually fun to be with. She also has a DJ business and set up her DJ booth. It was nice and fun.

They were talking to us about the weddings they do and they firmly believe that the Dollar Dance is a standard. My eyes got really big when they said this apparently and they asked me what I thought of them or what I was thinking.  I said I think it's "tacky anytime someone asks me to pull out money at a wedding, especially if it's peer pressured over the microphone". They were completely silent. I guess I know what's coming up at their wedding...no big surprise there. Now, I think she is DJing her own wedding, so I am wondering if she's going to announce her own dollar dance.

Next up, we found out that they planned the RD for a time FI (who is their best man) is working.  They didn't invite him to it because they assumed he wouldn't take it off. He's so very hurt that they made this assumption. He was quiet for a few hours of our party yesterday,  I didn't know why until everyone left.

So, back to the DJ thing, I pulled out the paperwork our own DJ gave us and Dollar Dance is actually written on a checklist for what we can request. Have people seriously had dollar dances suggested by their DJs??

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.

  • How do you DJ your own wedding?

She's having it at a hall they are rented. She can just set up all her equipment. From what I saw yesterday, it's all a big playlist from there.

ETA: I was actually amazed at how little equipment she had. It was a laptop, a few hard drives, speakers and a microphone. When I got married in 2007, my guy had 20 cases of CDs to lug in.

Yep. The DJ we just signed with has a list of events for which we're supposed to write in the song we want. One of the events is "Dollar Dance." I know they're relatively common in my area, but I haven't seen one at a wedding in recent memory, thank goodness.

  • DJs probably have a list of every wedding dance/song tradition out there and just suggest them all to the couples or make them available at least.

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Same here.  I've been to roughly a dozen weddings, and two had a dollar dance.  Hopefully there won't be another :)

  • Sometimes the dollar dance is a cultural thing. In those cases I think it's ok, though I still wouldn't want one at my own wedding. Having it as an option on a checklist seems a bit odd, but I guess they're covering all their bases.

It was rude of them to assume your FI wouldn't take the time off. Maybe after he has some time to let his emotions subside a little he can approach the groom about the situation. If not, at least he's off the hook- it's their faux pas, not his.

The DJ we ended up going with doesn't have it listed on their planning sheet, but some others that sent me theirs when I asked about prices did. I would say about half of the weddings I have been to have had dollar dances (we are not).

  • Yep, our DJ has it on his list as well, and we nixed that right quick. Along with bouquet toss, garter toss, chicken dance, etc. He's like, "So you're having a first dance, a father/daughter dance, a mother/son dance annnnnnd....that's it?" I was like, "Yeah, and a last dance. Yep, that's it."

Yup, my DJ asked if I was going to do the dollar dance and I just said No Thank You.

And that is weird to DJ your own wedding, but I guess it works.  Will they have an emcee of some sort?  I'm just used to the DJ being the emcee; but more power to her if she wants to attempt it.  Curious to see how it works out though!

edit: this was my 1000th post! crazy--and I thought I was more of a lurker haha

  • I'm not sure how she's going to emcee it. This whole wedding fascinates me. Ill know more mid July for sure.

  • The report on this wedding is going to break the board.
  • Imagine what my head is like!

Actually, I find it all fascinating.
