Randoms

1.  DD2 got her fingers smashed last night at Son's baseball game.  There are large metal storage boxes at the fields and DD1 opened it to look in and didn't know DD2 had put her hand on the rim.  Ugh.  The damn things are supposed to have locks on them.  The fingers aren't broken, but they're cut and she might lose her pinky nail.

2.  Our zoo might lose it's elephants.  A specialist has come in and said that our winters are just too long for the elephants to remain inside.  He is going to recommend getting rid of them to the county board, who owns the zoo.  I want what's best for the elephants, but dang it, I love them.  We always spend a long time watching them.  Also, our zoo just built them a brand new habitat, new this year.  This is the only zoo in the state with an elephant exhibit.  They did say that if they do move the elephants, they might replace them with rhinos.

3.  I guess I only had 2 randoms.

    1.  OUCH!  Poor baby.  Poor thing can't catch a break with the hand/arm situations this year.
    2. Boo!  Sad.  But if it's what's best for the big beasts, then it's understandable.  Rhinos could be fun.

    Oh, poor DD2!

All of the elephants at Brookfield Zoo died and have been dead for a couple of years- I haven't heard anything about them replacing them.  The Pachyderm House is pretty lame with a couple sad looking rhinos and pygmy hippos.  It's not even worth going in any more just because it smells so awful.

That's sad Ali.  I grew up taking field trips to Brookfield Zoo.  I loved going to see the elephants there.  Also the jungle/rainforest habitat was my favorite.

    1.  Poor thing.

    2.  Well, come visit me.  My little city and zoo, for all it's smallness, is considered to have one of the best elephant and elephant breeding programs in the nation (I think giraffes too).  Go figure.  We benefit from it though, there's seriously nothing that can put me in a mood of childlike glee than watching those baby elephants.

@VarunaTT - I love zoos.  Probably more than my kids.  If we go to a new city that has a zoo, we visit it (we're hitting up the Milwaukee zoo this weekend on our getaway).  Our giraffe habitat is very nice as well.  We've had two babies in the last 5 years or so, one was last year.

@alikatt17 - Is it Brookfield that has a poo warning sign next to the rhinos or am I thinking of St. Louis?  Son was 6ish when we visited last and he loved that dang sign - thought it was hilarious.  We took his picture next to it at his request.

I love zoos as well.  We're the same way, we always visit the zoo of any city we go to.

KC zoo was disappointing when we went.  I love the StL zoo.  While San Diego had some awesome things about it, I thought a lot of the exhibits were still kind of old school and not that great.  NOLA was AWESOME.

I'm a little spoiled by our city zoo.  We're small, but they've really worked on it  to make it amazing.  My favorite part is when you enter; they've actually kept a portion of the old exhibits up so that you can see how much has changed in the zoo.

    1.  Poor fingers,

    2. The zoo is one reason I don't want to leave.  We have some baby elephants, but no giraffes.  I'm planning a trip to see them though.  M2 is obsessed.  If anyone wants to g2g at our zoo I can get them in free.

How is it too cold for elephants but not too cold for rhinos?  Don't they both come from the same warm environment?  Maybe rhinos are hardier?

Heee, I forgot about the poo warning signs.

I also love the StL zoo.  I can't wait to take this kid to StL for a long weekend, there's so many fun things to do there for super cheap or free.

Man, that Discovery House (Magic House?) in StL, is the BOMB.  I like going in there myself.  I'm always asking friends to borrow kids so I can go in w/out looking like Stranger Danger.

I'm not a huge fan of zoos.  I don't know why, I've never been.  I guess I'm just the outlier here.

I'm also not a huge fan of this farking weather.  We're about to float away into wherever, and my job is directly affected by weather.  Which means the clock is running, the meter is running and we're getting NOTHING DONE.

Add to that doing job costing, and I'm about to just say f*ck it and run away.

StL is awesome for stuff to do.  We went for a week in 2007 and it was so much fun.  We went to the zoo, Magic house, two days at Six Flags, the brewery, Grant's Farm, and a Cubs/Cards game.

We were thinking of heading to KC sometime for a vacation, so it's disappointing to hear the zoo sucked, @varunatt.  They've got that amusement park and we'd probably hit a baseball game too.

I would visit again, @tawillers.  This a long time ago (we were there to see U2's Pop concert, so I've aged myself), so maybe they've improved.  I was just really disappointed, but I think I might be a zoo snob.  :D

    poor fingers.

(we lost our elephants at the closest big zoo, a fwe years ago. *sigh*

The zoo issue w/ elephant is the amunt of space for walking that's required.  Rhinos can live pretty happily in a very small amount of space.  elephants, ideally, ahve a lot of room to walk around and, during midwestern winters, they don't get to do that)

    #1 Ouch

#2 We are taking a road trip to visit my sister this weekend and will probably do the Omaha Zoo.  I love that place!

If you've been to STL but not the City Museum (<--clicky), you haven't really been to STL.

We did that one, too, @zsazsa-stl.  I knew I was forgetting something.

Son had so much fun climbing in that place.

I'm sad about your elephants. They're my favorite.
It's interesting that they built a new outdoor habitat but didn't expand the indoor portion.

Houston's zoo has Asian elephants, and a fantastic breeding program. They have 3 young elephants right now (all 3 are something like 2-5yo) in addition to the bull and (3? 4?) adult females. The trainers have a pittbull mix that works with the elephants.

Pittsburgh has another great elephant breeding program and habitat. They have African elephants.

Highly recommend both zoos if you're ever in town.

6fsn - the giraffes are coming next year, right?   In the meantime, you could take a day trip to Toledo.  Their zoo has a bunch of giraffes and if you ride the train through their "safari" area, you can get *very* close.   Plus, they just opened an Australian exhibit and the wallabies are adonkable.

Oh!  And please to be going to the Cbus zoo and see the baby gorilla and report back.  The pictures they posted on facebook are precious.
