Tips for Florist Consults

I'm meeting with three florists this afternoon. I've got pictures of my dress, swatches of colors I like for the BM dresses, and pictures of bouquets I like.

But honestly, I'm kind of all over the place in my ideas. Did you bring/do anything helpful for your florist appointments?

Re: Tips for Florist Consults

  • I had emailed her previously some pics of bouquets that I kind of liked with corals (which, as I know you know, I Googled...heh heh!)  I was all over the place, too, so I just tried to convey to her the colors I was interested in and I let her take artistic control of what kinds of flowers worked together. I loved everything she did for me.

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • That Google...magic, I tell you.

Yeah, I'm hoping they'll be over to just take over for me. I'm probably over-thinking. I'm just worried they'll ask what I want and I'll have to shrug and say "Yellow?"

  • They are probably used to that!  Like, I had no idea which flowers would be in season and/or even came in the colors I wanted. So she showed me pics of things and I said yay or nay to them.

  • I brought pics (google, of course) and knew 2 colors to omit, along with one family of flowers to avoid (based on personal preference). We discussed my dress and the BM dresses along with the mens' attire. From there, they talked about the pros and cons of the pics I brought in. I had 4 pics that I liked the most, so we focused on those. I am OOT also, so it was important (for me) to feel like they knew enough to make judgement calls week-of at would be satisfactory to me. Both of my floral consults went well and I definitely think having pictures was a huge help.
  • If you don't have specific species of flowers in mind, just go with some inspiration pictures and a general idea. Make sure you think about if you want loose arrangements (think like wildflower look) or tight, perfectly put together arrangements. With that info and your budget, a good florist should be able to pick out flowers that grow in the season you're getting married (or can be shipped in for a higher price) and match the color and feel you're going for.

Florists know what questions to ask. Ours asked at least 101 so she'd know the look and direction we wanted.
  • I went in to my florist with a ton of photos off pinterest orange calla lilys which would've been really expensive and she suggested we only use them for FI and I, and use different flowers for the rest of the bridal party. It brought my cost way way down. I also actually really like the ones she used for the others

She told me she hates pinterest because people come in with all these photos of amazing flowers that are also really expensive and they don't like the prices that go with it. She just suggests being open to substitutes....and I was and I'm elated.

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.

  • Thank you all for your advice!

You were all correct. Appointments went way better than I expected. I think we're actually going to go with the florist who was the best at just kind of making up ideas for me haha. She was cheap too, which doesn't hurt.
