Running Goals?

I ran a little last summer, and am going to start it up again. Today I ran around my neighborhood (about 4/5 of a mile) in just under 9 minutes. What's a decent goal for a mile time by November? Also, any tips for running with dogs?

Re: Running Goals?

  • ditto kwith.  every time i set speed goals early in my running process i flamed out and gave up.  granted that's just me and you could certainly be different.  last year i spent months just getting used to running and slowly increasing distance without regard for pace.  and i actually enjoyed running (which I definitely did not before, when I was so concerned with speed)!!  once that base built up, my time has melted away significantly.  to give some perspective, when I started last spring i was running about 11 minute miles on 2 mile runs.  now (on my half 2 weeks ago) i ran 8:30 mile pace, and can probably do a (barely) sub-7 minute mile if I just ran one, though I never do.  Clearly these times aren't setting the world on fire, but they're WAY better than I've ever been before, and I think it's 100% due to giving myself time to learn my stride, gait, etc and building that up before thinking about speed.

whatever you do, best of luck to you and hope you keep checking in.  we have lots of people bitten by the running bug, so it's a great place to get information and support.

Ditto all of the above. You could measure out a mile and see how fast it takes you as a bench mark and build speed from there, but know that if you run far you will be slower. I am a slow runner... A fast mile for me is 8:50 but when I run a marathon I'm thrilled to run a 10:30 pace. It's different for everyone. It took the competitive me a long time to accept this. I'd suggest running without a watch and get to know your body and breath. It takes time to learn your body's natural pace but that is fundamental for any type of training. I hope you keep running and set a goal. That could be a faster mile, a 5k or simply running without stopping. Let us know how it goes! @choagie- your story has inspired me to do more speed work!

  • Thanks so much everyone! Based on your advice, I'll start by working on distance - there's an alternate route in my neighbor hood that's just over a mile. I'll work my way up to that.

As for my dog, she was trained to run a little last summer. She's very good on walks, and I think she'll be fine to run with. I'll be sure to watch her and make sure she doesn't overheat!
