I'm so excited to see Star Trek this weekend!!! FI and I have never seen a movie in 3D before, so we're trying to decide if it's worth it or not! What do you think?

Eh. 3D is cool, but you're not really missing out if you don't do it. I am ambivalent.

Re: 3D movies: yay or nay?

  • Honestly it depends on how it was filmed.  If the movie was filmed in 3D then it's worth it. If it was converted to 3D post production then it's not.  I tend to avoid 3D because I hate wearing the glasses.

I have to say 3D movies are horrible AND I hate going to the movies. 3D movies were awesome when I was a kid, but now they just give me headaches. I can't go to the movies either because of my hearng disability. It's no fun sitting in a theater when everyone starts laughing and I'm just sitting there like "What? What was so funny?"

Is there any way to look up how it was filmed?

I forgot about the glasses!  Would FI and I have to wear thos OVER our existing ones?

ETA: I meant to quote you @HobokenBride2012, I don't know how I messed that up!

  • I've seen a few movies in 3D, but they were mostly movies with the option for viewing in 3D rather than movies MADE for 3D - the Lion King and HP#7 part 2. They were cool, but I considering that they were made more for traditional formatting, the cool factor was low on the scale.

I mean, it's worth it to go once in your life, but unless the movie is specifically made for 3D, it's kinda a waste of money.

Yes so it may be uncomfortable for you.

ETA: I believe you can google how it was filmed.

  • I looked it up, and it was converted to 3D post-production.  So, definitely not made for 3D.  I didn't even realize there was a difference!  I thought it was one or the other, guess not!
  • Definitely depends on how it was filmed. Also, for some reason I have an easier time with animated 3D than live action. I would skip star-trek in 3D, but the 3D in the Croods was pretty cool.

If you wear glasses already, it'd probably be more trouble than it's worth.

Some are good, some are not as good. I thought Life of Pi in 3D was fantastic. However, our first 3D movie several years ago, A Christmas Carol, wasn't anything special.

I do love the Muppets in 3D at MGM Studios!

YES!  That's the ONLY thing I've ever seen in 3D!
  • They give me headaches.

  • I get motion sickness very easily and the last 3D movie I went to, I walked out so sick to my stomach.

  • Yeah, we'll probably skip the 3D.  Maybe I'll see another movie some day with it to see if I like it or not.  Chances are I won't like it, and I don't want to ruin my Star Trek viewing experience!
  • I don't mind it either way, but DH doesn't see the 3D.  Apparently, some people can't, so all the glasses do for him is to make the mess on the screen look like a regular movie.  We're going to Star Trek tomorrow (woohoo!!) and I think it's in 3D, but that's cos we can reserve our seats in that theatre and not have to wait in line for good seats

  • I enjoyed Jurassic Park 3D.  It made it feel more real...
  • I second Avatar being awesome in 3D. I felt like I was playing WOW and it was suddenly real life.

I overall enjoy 3D. FI hates it because he's expecting it to be novelty like Muppets 3D at the park (which I do love, of course) but he thinks stuff is going to keep popping out at him and make him flinch. I find that overall, I feel that it's more of an enhancement than a novelty and I like it.

I enjoyed Jurassic Park, not sure if it was because it was 3D or if it was because I hadn't seen it in the theater in 20 years. I mean, I got way excited about Ghostbusters playing at a "local" theater because I got to see it on the big screen too.

(By "local" I mean well over an hour, but worth every mile)

I am not a fan of 3D in general, however I only see 3D movies that were actually filmed in 3D. I believe in seeing a movie as the director intended. In this case, JJ Abrams was VERY against filming it in 3D, the movie studio persuaded him to allow for a conversion in post.

Something like Avatar is really really hard for me to watch in 3D. Too much movement. However I thought Life of Pi was really well done. H & I always read 3D reviews before deciding which version to see.

  • i do like 3d but they need to be improved a lot in my opinion!
  • I don't like 3D for the most part.  I agree Avatar was excellent in 3D but I wouldn't waste my money on Star Trek.

You say 'Treehugger' like it's a bad thing...

  • Nay. I have extremely poor vision (but correctable, I'm grateful for little mercies), and the vast majority of 3D movies tweak my eyes. I have had trouble even walking after leaving a 3D movie because my depth perception will be so far off. The only ones that I can tolerate are done by Pixar; I think because it's a "milder" 3D.
  • I can't stand 3D.
  • I think 3D is highly overrated. To me, adding another dimension doesn't really add much.  If the visuals are great, they're going to look great in any dimension.  And honestly, it irks me that Avatar used a lame storyline + 3D to make so much money, when it sucked as a movie overall.  Visuals do not a good movie make.  It can be pretty to look at, but horrible to watch.

All of this. H works in the film industry, and most of them hate it. It's just a gimmick, it adds NOTHING to a movie. And while I agree that some are done better than others, overall, that's not how movies are meant to be enjoyed. It's a neat trick, but that's about it.
  • I also get headaches from 3D.  I prefer 2D.  That being said, I think Avatar looked nice in 3D, but I didn't actually enjoy the movie.  Except the jokes I had with my friend about "hair sex" - that was amusing.

  • I hate 3D, but I also have eye problems and my eyes spend the majority of the time going side to side trying to focus themselves. Needless to say it immediately makes me feel sick and have to leave

  • I agree with Hoboken. I hate wearing those 1 size fits all galsses. This first 15 mins or so also give me a headache until my eyes adjust.
