merging finances

So my fiance and I opened a joint bank account last week or so, and today we got the box of checks in the mail with both of our names in it and I totally had a "squeeeee!!" moment that I just don't think anybody appreciated. Anyway, I am super excited even if it is no big deal. :D

  • I took a pic of ours and sent it to my husband. I'm 40 and squeed over that. So you squee away!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • OH coopergirl JUST wait. ;)
I don't know about you, but I had so much stuff to change, some of it is STILL in the works. It was such a huge pain. Even with my frequent flier accounts, I had to write a letter and send a copy of our marriage certificate and new driver's license. Not a plane ticket, JUST my mileage accounts. So many dumb things you don't think about until it comes back to bite you when it's too late.

  • I added FI to my checking/savings months ago.  It was really fun!  Because he was moving to my area, it just made sense.  We never ordered new checks though.  The bank said that even if only my name is on the check, he's still allowed to sign his name on them, because he's on the account.  We'll get new ones with both our names once I change mine!

  • Ugh I don't want to do it. I love my bank and he loves his, but my bank has zero locations in our city. So I know his will win. I just don't want to give mine up without a fight!

Honestly, I'm perfectly okay leaving our accounts separate for another year. But that would be weird.

I don't think that would be too weird, especially if it works for you now. H and I still have separate accounts. We are just taking our time with all of that.
  • For now, FI and I are leaving our checking accounts separate and are instead opening a joint savings.   We have the same views on spending and saving, with a big emphasis on saving.  We make very close to the same amount of money now, so leaving it this way isn't that big of a deal.  FI is having a rockstar year at work so he may leap ahead in earnings and when that happens we'll probably discuss a joint checking then.

I honestly can't tell you the last time I physically wrote a check.  Most of mine come directly from my bank account and our sent off from the bank.  But I would probably squee all over the place seeing our names together.

it's not weird if it works for you.  I do wonder how a person can "love" a bank though.  Do they blow you after every deposit or something?  it's just a bank.

Another option is to have your joint account at his bank, and just keep a savings at your bank.

  • We have his, mine, and ours. I had to completely change banks, however, b/c there are no locations of my old bank in the entire state of Virginia.
