Engagement ring sent out for resizing, came back missing a diamond!

When we first got engaged in December, I had to have the ring sent out to be resized. While it was out I also had our date engraved. It came back in perfect condition 14 (that’s right FOURTEEN) days later. Their standard service time.

Fast forward to end of May. I lost some weight so the ring no longer fits snuggly on my finger and so I went back to Kay Jewelers to have it sent back out to be resized. They say 14 days…Fine I will part with it for 14 days.

Today I got all excited to pick it up and put it back on my finger. So they hand me my beautiful ring back and I nearly started crying. First off, they forgot to re-engrave our date like the service slip says to. After closer inspection there is a diamond MISSING out of the inside of the band.  They promise to fix it free of charge and they apologize profusely. To top it all off, a side diamond was severely DISCOLORED! It looked as if one of the diamonds had fallen out and they replaced it with a yellow or chocolate diamond. I brought it to their attention and they tried to brush it off like it was dirty. They cleaned it and NOPE. There is something wrong with the diamond.

Now its being sent back out for another FOURTEEN days. I am so beside myself. I almost started to cry in the jewelry store. I can not believe a repair shop could mess something up so severely.

I felt kind of bad for the people in the store because they were being so helpful and understanding as I was having a mini-breakdown. (They have no choice but to use this repair shop because corporate tells them who they can and can not use.)

if they said they will fix it, this really isn't breakdown worthy. accent diamonds are also not as expensive as a regular center stone-worthy diamond. even if you mistreated your ring and lost a side stone, it's not that serious of a problem.

not that i wouldn't be upset if my ring came back damaged, but if you were on the verge of a breakdown, i suggest getting yourself together and calm down a little. things happen. breathe.

  • Why are you having a breakdown over this? First world problems yo.
  • @wzz  I use breakdown because Im upset, but I'm exaggerating a bit. I am pretty upset though. Im just sick of the nosey people at work asking where it is, or if we're having problems. I pretty much tell them to MYOB and everything is fine, but its still a pain in the behind. Plus I really just want it back already.

Im just more surprised about how careless the jeweler was in all of this. When the store called the jeweler to fix the problem, the jewelers attitude was "oh yeah sorry bout that. I'll see what I can do." Its like the whole "sorry I'm not sorry" bit.
  • @Jean0715 - I'm sorry about your ring!  I would be really upset too - engagement rings really do mean a lot more than just the monetary value.  I'm sure if it were me, I'd be devastated too.  Hopefully, the repairs will go well and it will come back to you just the way it is supposed to.
  • So yeah, chill on the engraving, they'll replace the side stone that went missing. Accidents happen. The swapped out side stone? Side stone or not, that's kinda shady without full disclosure.

devastated? really? please get a grip, women. these are not things to lose your sh***t over.

i agree that replacing a side stone with a poor wuality stone is bad, but at least you saw it, and they are fixing it. crisis averted.

  • dharmabunny I was ready to walk out of the store without the engraving and get it done at a later date. I was even ready to deal with the missing diamond at a later date. But it was the fact that one of the diamonds was discolored that really upset me and the fact that it was super noticeable. I think it would have been different if it had been one thing wrong. Mistakes do happen here and there. But all THREE in one shot. I was pissed.
  • The Kay that my FSIL went to gave her  completely different diamond (center stone), after she took the ring in for repairs (a prong had broken), that was very obviously included . It looked like there was a flake of mascara stuck in the diamond but she didn't say anything about it when we urged her to (her original stone was not included like this). Fast forward a couple of months, and her diamond has actually chipped because the inclusion screwed with the diamond's structure. And then she got it fixed. Just like you've done.

All that to say, you're not the only one that has had issues, but it's not the end of the world. There's no need to freak out-- especially if they say they'll fix it. Just relax and  breathe. There are bigger things that can and will go wrong than this.
  • @snippet17 Thats terrible! I am so sorry that this is happening. I hope you get your ring back quick and it be in perfect condition.

Sure I'd be pissed.  What the heck at the coworkers asking if things are good though?  Just tell them Kay sucks and move on.
  • @Jean0715 I second that your  coworkers are being annoying.  I haven't worn my ring since February.  No, I am NOT having problems and of course the engagement's still on . . . Tell them that they have been reading too many tabloids about Miley Cyrus.  The magazines go nuts every time that poor girl takes her ring off.  Not all of us wear it 24-7.
