Game of Thrones fans? (don't open if you haven't watched last night's episode)

First, have you read the books?

How did you feel about last night's episode? If you didn't read the books, did you see it coming?

And I need to share this site. It is hilarious: http://io9.com/the-100-best-tweets-about-last-nights-game-of-thrones-511003444

My favorite of the Tweets is this one:

  • I haven't watched yet but could not resist peeking here. Hahaha!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I just watched it WHILE discussing weddings with a friend via text. As crazy as I think her wedding will be, I'm pretty sure it won't be THAT crazy.

  • My H is a huge fan, and so are all of his friends, so I've heard everything there is to hear about the series.

That being said, seeing the brutality is different than just hearing about it second hand, especially against the wife.  Bleh.

  • I haven't seen the series but I read the books.  This one is my favorite.

If you're watching game of thrones tonight and you haven't yet read the series... You know nothing of pain, sweet summer child.

I want to read the books this summer. Seriously, what a crazy emotional scene... My mouth dropped, and I freaking cried lol. They were my two favorite characters! None of my coworkers watch it, so I had no one to talk to yesterday. Can't wait for next week, I hope they get rid of king Joffrey!!! If you've read the books, please don't ruin hope for me lol.

  • I agree with @Liatris2010.  I was more disturbed when I read it than actually seeing it.

Robb's wife wasn't even at the Twins when this all went down in the books (she was never pregnant either).  I hope I'm not ruining anything for anyone by saying that.  I get annoyed at some of the differences between the books and the series.

  • I don't mind when they change things for the tv series, but it does make me speculate about what happens in the books that have yet to be written. For instance, a few episodes ago Melisandre and Arya had a scene together-that isn't in the books. So is that a hint that those two have a plot line together later?

@Iryshcreem, some of the differences annoy me too, but I like some of them. Talisa was much more interesting than Jayne Westerling, and I like how they re-wrote the wedding night between Drogo and Daenerys.
I actually felt the opposite about their wedding night.  In the book, Drogo was MUCH less rapey.  On the TV he basically shoved her down, barked his lines that were supposed to make it not rape, and then forced her.  My H was like "Aaaaaack HBO what are you doing!?!?"

  • I don't mind some of the changes either like not cutting Robb's head off and replacing it with Grey Winds.  And killing Walder's wife instead of the grandson doesn't make a difference to the story.  But like @daria24 said, what was with that Meilsandre and Arya scence?  I wonder if this is setting up the 6th book and one of the storylines that George RR Martin gave them to use in case he dies before he finishes the 6th book.

Book 3 was my favorite and I'm glad they are splitting it up into 2 seasons.  I don't know how they fit these books into less than 10 hours.

I agree, and in the book it bothered me. IRL, something like that would be really freakin' rapey. You're 13, you are married off in exchange for an army to a warlord much your senior, who you can't even speak to because of a language barrier. There is no way you are like, "Oh I'm nervous, but wait, you don't seem so bad, and you're pretty buff, so bend me over," which is kind of how it goes down in the books, where she just gives in (albeit with some coercion). I like that it is rapey in the TV show because I think raped is how I would feel in that situation.
Hrm... that's a good point.  Now I'm envisioning the producer and director trying scene after scene to make it like the book, then just being like "Aw eff it, let's call an apple an apple."

Funny story, there's an audio book (only part of the book I've 'read') that my H and I listened to on a long road trip, and it had a hiiiiiilarious voice actor.  He was very proper and British until Drogo wedding night scene.  Of course, with his accent, that scene starts sounding kinda steamy... until he gets to Drogo's lines.  The voice actor used the most high pitched, old man "Noooooooo?".  OMG I was lucky I wasn't driving or I would have crashed the car from laughing.

  • Yeah, I don't like how much is changing from the books to the series, but with that said, I enjoy both. I've read the first four books and plan on tackling the fifth soon.

My FI has been dreading the Red Wedding all season. He loves Rob and thought he should be the king. I'm not ruling out the wolf head on his body though. I think we might see that next week.

They also changed how Jon and Ygritte's story played out. I might be remembering it wrong, but I thought Jon stayed with the Wildlings until the big battle.

I missed Tyrion in this episode. He's probably my favourite, and my heart broke for him last week at his wedding.

  • @kks4471 since ASOS was split into two seasons the royal wedding will be at the end of next season not next week

Boo, ok, I definitely need to read the books.  Time to purchase them for my Kindle.

  • I read the books I can't wait for the next one to come out.  I think next year it does.  I really enjoyed them

FI & I watched season 1 & 2 on HBO when we moved we did not get HBO so we haven't been watching season 3.  I saw a lot of disgruntled posts on FB Sunday night regarding GOT so I decided to see if I could find a recap of the episode once I saw it was the red wedding I understood.  I remember gasping out loud and being real upset after reading that.  I can't wait to catch up on season 3 at some point.

  • @IryshCreem, I found it weird that they had her there, too. Since she did not go to the Twins, and therefore was alive in the books, I thought they'd have some use for her later on. I wonder if George R. R. Martin knew he had no use for her later in the books or if he had to change his plans based on what the show's writers did.
  • Okay, H and I just finally watched. I thought it was going to be a lot worse based upon viewer reactions, but I've read the books so I was expecting that and worse. I admit to yelling "Kill the wife, kill the wife!" at the screen at the very end.

I heard in an interview that G.R.R.M. asked that since the show's portrayal of Vargo Hoat was so different than the character in the books, HBO change the TV character's name.  That's where Locke came from as the leader of the Brave Companions.  I'm assuming the same could be said for Jayne Westerling's change to Talisa in the show.  I'm assuming G.R.R.M. didn't care about killing of Talisa and she's not truly a book character.  Also, for the poster that stated Westerling was not pregnant in the books, there is a lot of foreshadowing from Catelyn constantly referring to Westerling's "child bearing hips" that she may have been, hence the Heir of the North theory.  As far as the Melissandra/Arya scene and Melissandre stealing away with Gendry, I don't know WTF was going on there.  Especially since that is the episode I thought was written by G.R.R.M.  I hated that scene and think it's sullys the Brotherhood without Banners as their mantra is to protect the small folk.

Although she's not a real character, in the books Robb leaves behind a wife who could possibly be pregnant (nowhere does it say she is, but it's possible). She or this possible child could have appeared in a later book. Now they can't because it would be problematic when they adapt the book for a later season because his TV wife died.

I didn't like the Melisandre/Arya/Gendry scene. I guess they wanted to avoid introducing the additional character of Edrik, but it ruined BWB for me.
  • I haven't read the books, but I love the show.  I was a little surprised, but not really because he's pretty known for killing off major characters, which I actually love.  In most books/shows, you always feel a sort of safety because you know that no matter what scrapes they get into, the main characters are usually pretty safe.  But in GoT, you never really know what's going to happen, so it keeps it interesting.
