Reception Bar Placement?

We love one venue for our reception. Our only concern is that: the bar is not located in the same room as the dancing (it's in another room a short distance away)

SO has anyone been to a wedding or had your wedding where the bar was not in the same room as the dancing?

If so, did everyone spend their time in the bar and NOT on the dance floor having fun?

I would hate for the next day to think to myself: "It would have been so fun if people weren't leaving all the time to get a drink!"

Should we risk professionalism and efficency and just serve drinks off of tables in the main room and close off the back bar?

Please help! :)

Re: Reception Bar Placement?

  • Yes, I've experienced it.  But people just went back and forth between the bar and the dance room.
  • I have not ever seen this...but I think that if people want to dance, they'll go to the bar and come back quickly to dance, and if they don't want to dance, they wouldn't be dancing whether the bar was in the room or not.  Assuming they can still bring drinks into the room with the dance floor- it's not like they're restricted to the bar area, right?

Thank you for your response!  No, the bar area will NOT be restricted in any way and guests can absolutely bring drinks back into the main room!

  • yes many times. people will come and go. some will congregate by the bar and chat and some wont. but it's fine. dont consider closing off the bar area to avoid it. that's just micromanagy.

i've been to 2 weddings where the bar was outside of the area where tables and dancing were.  the first one...wasn't really an issue because it was super close and no one hung out in that hall area.  in the other TONS of people were mingling out by the 2 bars and the large space in between.  this was also where the "photobooth" was.  in this case it didn't work out as well - there were tons of us all from college who hadn't seen each other in a while. a lot of people we hadn't seen in years so it was easiest to catch up and mingle in this area.  the dj also wasn't playing the best music but oh well.  if the bar is a small area that people won't be tempted to hang out i don't think its a huge deal but i would be careful.
you could also have wine at the tables?
