Let's discuss some dancing!

We've kinda gone thru the first dance with FI but what about others?

What song are you dancing with your father to?
What about FI and mom?

What songs are musts, and which ones are no-gos?

I am going thru a list of songs my dad asked me to listen to and I'm pretty close to balling. Why, oh why, do these songs have to be so gut wrenching?
S'mores. Just S'mores please.

Re: Let's discuss some dancing!

  • One of the "must play" songs that most people hate: Shout. Yes. As in "you know you make me wanna...". Yep. It's kind of a Purdue football after the 3rd quarter thing.

My FH may be singing for my dance with dad. I think we're going with "The Way You Look Tonight". Mom ok'd it. His dance with his mom? Not sure, something else by Sinatra, probably.

I've restricted it to one of the "line dance-y" type thing, like Electric Slide. We'll give a list of "do not play" and "must play" to the DJ once we have it figured out. Two others that are on our "must play" list are Paradise, by Styx, and Rhythm of Love by Plain White T's. Paradise is what he sang to me during the lavalier (essentially a promise ring, but a necklace) ceremony, and Rhythm of Love is what he sang before he proposed. But, we've decided neither of those can be our first dance song since they already have meaning behind them.
  • We are not doing a traditional reception and there will be no dancing (2 hour reception). FI and I may dance for pictures but I do not think we are doing a formal first dance in front of everyone. We started taking dance lessons awhile back when we thought we were going to have a bigger wedding but they turned out to be just for fun in the end because we changed our plans.

  • No dancing here either.  Our venue is a restaurant with no dance floor space.

That said, I'd once thought if I got married, I wanted to dance with my dad to "Sunrise, Sunset" from Fiddler on the Roof.  Because, you know, it doesn't get much more literal than that shit.  And I'm all about ripping out hearts with the feels!  :)
  • We don't have "a song" and don't have any songs that are super meaningful to us at this point.  I would love a Coldplay song as our first dance ("Yellow") but I'm not sure FI is into it. We still have to figure out our song choices.

For my dance with my father, I'm thinking "Dream the Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha. A while back, my sister and I were in a production of Man of La Mancha as the featured moorish dancers. My dad was also in the production as a prisoner guard, so it is a show we did together. My sister used "Sunrise, Sunset" from Fiddler on the Roof, since they were in that together as well (I was not in that show.)  We were also in "Grease!" together, but I don't think the songs are as wedding-appropriate, but I have to go back and double check.

I don't really have any must play or don't play songs as of this moment.

  • FI and I are dancing to I'll Stand by you, by the Pretenders.  I just figured out my song for my dad and I.  My dad as talking to my mom and Somewhere over the rainbow came on and he suggested that FI and I dance to that since it always reminds him of me, which makes me happy that he remembers that my favorite movie is Wizard of Oz.  Just need to figure out which version I'm going to use.  Any of you ladies have a favorite version of Somewhere over the rainbow?

FI and his mom are dancing to Phil Collins, You'll be in my heart.
  • We haven't officially picked all our songs yet, but have narrowed down a few choices. For our first dance we're deciding between 'Love You Madly' by Cake, 'I Believe (When I Fall in Love)' by Stevie Wonder, or maybe 'You Make My Dreams' by Hall & Oates.

For FI's dance with his mom, he's leaning towards 'Your Song' by Elton John because his dad used to play piano and sing it to her...and it makes her cry happy tears. But now he's considering other things.

And for my dance with my dad, originally he wanted some Simply Red song that was awful. Since going to another wedding, he decided that was super boring, and wants to have the mariachi band that's playing our cocktial hour perform the song we dance to. His last suggestion was La Vida Carneval.

My dad and I haven't talked about it yet, but I was going to suggest "Can't Smile Without You" by Barry Manilow because it was my favorite song when I was a little kid and I asked my mom to play the record over and over. It seems appropriate for the occasion and we so do not have the "Butterfly Kisses/Daddy's Little Girl" type of relationship. NO idea what FI and his mom will dance to - he was like "Uh, she'll probably pick Wind Beneath My Wings or some crap". I asked what they danced to at his first wedding and he had no idea :/
  • Due to budget constraints we aren't having a DJ; but the winery does have a sound system that we can play cds.  So we are going to burn cds with music we like and use the deck as the dance floor.  About half of the guests are older, and we are doing appetizers instead of sit down dinner, so not sure there will be a lot of dancing.  I'm kind of interested to see if they do get up and dance!

My FI and I are dancing to Kenny Chesney's "Me and You".  He picked it as our song.  For the dance with my dad I want "Butterfly Kisses".  I know the song is overplayed at weddings but my dad use to give me butterfly kisses before bed when he tucked me in.  I don't know what FI and his mom are dancing to.

@lplions -- was your FI in a fraternity? My FI is a Sigma Chi and lavaliered me the end of his senior year!
No, but he was in the Glee Club. They got the tradition from the Greek system.

ETA: The seniors got 2, actually. One for their moms and one for the girl they intend to marry. I about DIED when he surprised me with it.

My FI and his mom love the Wizard of Oz.  It was the first movie they watched together when he was born.  He is using it for their dance together.  He says Judy Garland is the best.  I remember I loved it when Katherine McPhee sang it on Idol!

FI also says this girl is amazing.  Shes 6 years old.  You gotta listen!

  • @lpilons, I put Rhythm of Love on our must play list, too! I have to admit I actually kind of like the line-dance type of songs, because I am a terrible dancer, so we are going to have a couple of those (Cupid Shuffle and Cha-Cha Slide).

I'm debating what to do for the father-daughter dance, mainly because I won't be having one. Long story short my dad is probably not coming. But I asked my future FIL if he would do a dance with me (as his only "child" who actually likes football, he has taken a liking to me!), so I need to figure out a song for that. Any suggestions?

  • @jessyk1065 Oh, don't get me wrong. I love the line dances too, but I've been to a few weddings where the line dances were all one after another. I can't do them all in a row like that!! So, if we want to do them fine, but I'm going to make sure the DJ understands: absolutely do NOT play them back-to-back. Space those suckers out.
