Ethereal Wedding Ideas

My fiance and I are having a large fall wedding at an event center in south jersey. We are both huge fantasy geeks(we larp are huge fans of lord of the rings and other things like that) and we wanted to incorporate that into our reception by having an Ethereal Forest inspired wedding (based off of rivendell. we don't want people to come in going "ugh...this is a larp/lotr wedding" but we do want to have that forest magic feel to it.)

we are planning on using branches/ trees with lights in them as center pieces and decorations (I work for a tree service company, so getting the branches will be relatively easy)

we aren't allowed to hang anything on the walls, so we will be relying on the trees and creative lighting to give it the vibe we are looking for. We are paying for it mostly ourselves so we're trying to put the most money we can into food and drinks.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to how we can further portray this?

pardon my ignorance, but i feel like if i will be getting the tree sections for free, i'm not sure how that's as strenuous to my budget as you are implying...unless there is a huge factor I'm missing...

also, we thought a smoke machine would be great, but we noticed that smoke machines indoors have a tendency to do freaky things with technology like smoke detectors, and illnesses like asthma, we -were- thinking of doing a couple table foggers...maybe we can bring that idea back, theyre only $10-15 at family dollar

  • You could always put dry ice in water for the fog effect.

What venue in SNJ are you talking about?

Depending on where you choose...you may have a LOT of decorating to do in order to pull off this theme.

  • also, StageManager, while I completely understand your apparent desire to be a sarcastic know-it-all, I wonder why you expected me not to have done that before (case in point http://pinterest.com/omgrawrgoyle/wedding/) and assumed I was speaking to a community of bridal party to be's just for snots and giggles...or just to have them plan my wedding for me...should I apologize to you for ruining your community experience with my apparent misconception that I was speaking to a group of my peers to brainstorm possibly new ideas i hadn't come across in a basic google search?

This is specifically a board for "Reception Ideas" as decorations is a large part of the reception in a wedding, I assumed I wasn't too far out of line in asking others for a few extra pointers.

    My Bad.

  • @RachelSneed If you are having an issue with what people post, ignore it. She was simply giving you ideas. I don't see why you're so upset. I actually sat through the entire thing and found it helpful. So I don't see what the problem is...

  • What about having the wedding IN a wooded area? The wooded look is free there too.

There's a summer camp in my home tow great wooded areas that are cleared that people use for weddings.  It looks neat. I saw photos of one where they had 100s of battery operated tealights in little votives all around the place.

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.

I don't see the problem either. I rolled my eyes at the outburst.

  • I appreciate the sanitation pointers, honestly, I was planning on using the tree sections around the walls and on the floor (in planters/pots. using spray foam to secure the branches into the vessel) to bring the woods "inside" and to make it less of a plain white wall (which is what it is)

The Venue I'm using is Wheaton Arts Culture Center in Millville, NJ and the ceremony will be outdoors. We just wanted to have the reception indoors since the weather in October is unpredictable.

Ok.  So unless I'm mistaken, you essentially rent the events center there and they give you some tables/chairs and you have to bring everything else in yourself.

So, to pull off this kind of a 'mood' you're going to need a lot of trees, etc. in the actual venue itself and you're probably going to want to talk to your DJ about getting an uplighting package for ambient lighting if possible.

Are you looking to DIY (the decorations) or rent them?  It sounds like you might be thinking about DIY.   What kind of a budget are you working with?

We have a 9000 budget for the wedding, It's a bit flexible depending on what deals we get and how much we wind up saving until then (we haven't stopped saving, that's just about what we have so far...my family is planning on helping, but I don't want to put too much of a strain on their wallets. My dad and his wife said they'd take care of most of the beer and wine). And what help we can get. My bridesmaids and I are pretty crafty, and we have already started going through plans and timelines, but I definitely don't want to put too much on their plate...theyre my friends, not my slave labor...but I am still planning on DIYing most of it. The wedding will be in October of 2014 so there is time. I would just like to brainstorm as much as possible so that "tree branches in pots" aren't my only source of decoration in the space.

I like the idea of the uplighting package.
  • What about manzanita branches?

I'd suggest going for a really rich material for your table cloths...I wouldn't do green...maybe a golden hue or a really pastel pink with a little shimmer to it?  And then you could do a golden hue or even a green hue for the uplighting.  You're probably going to want lots of little tea lights and/or twinkle lights throughout the venue.

I'd skip trying to drape anything on the walls/ceiling.  Too much money and too much time.

I'd stay away from smoke/steam/dry ice.  For some reason...that just seems to scream cheezy prom or be a recipe for someone to have an asthma attack, etc.  And all you need is one person who has had too much to drink (or is a kid and doesn't know better) stick their hands in dry ice and you could wind up with a trip to an emergency room.

Check out Michael's for DIY supplies and perhaps even lessons.    Something else to check out is renting the centerpieces.  There's a place called Amore Events that rents the 'tree' centerpieces.  It might be a good option for you depending on their pricing.

Honestly, if budget is a strong factor, I'd say skip it and find a different decorating scheme.  Lighting and greenery are the two keys to making this sort of concept work in an indoor space, and neither are cheap.

But since you asked specifically for decorating ideas, I'll give you this --->Click Me
