Re: DD

  • Man that does suck. If I were in the situation, I'd tell Bob that you can prove he falsified records (you can right?) and that if he doesn't admit it today that you are going to the boss tomorrow and whatever happens will be out of your control(this will give him a few hours to mull it over).

Tomorrow I'd go to the boss with the proof that Bob falsified records and lied. It does suck terribly, but he needs to be honest and say "I fucked up." We all do it sometimes. I've fucked up in my job a few times. Fucking up happens, but it's how a person deals with the aftermath that shows their true colors.

  • When is this project/task due? Since it is ultimately your responsibility, I would first make sure that it is completed as quickly as possible. As a supervisor, if one of my co-workers came to me with a long drawn out excuse for why it isn't done I would be extremely irritated. In the time it has taken to research and look into why someone else didn't do it, they could have just completed it.

I would then talk to a direct supervisor about the chain of events since you did uncover that Bob amended records to cover his ass. If they find that he did it, it will be up to them to deliver the appropriate disciplinary action.

  • I probably wouldn't get the actual employee involved, since I don't think it's your place. Go to your boss.

Agreed--so if he fessed up to you, would that make it okay? No.

I guess I don't understand what cornering him would really accomplish.

  • I agree with PPs -- make sure the job is done first and foremost. And then go to your supervisors. Don't give Bob a chance to 'come clean' -- you gave him one already and he lied. Giving him another chance to 'fess up isn't necessary. He knew the ramifications of doing what he did, and he did it anyway. He now has to suffer the consequences of those actions.

  • I'd go to the boss who doesn't like Bob and say something very careful that you can't be sued for, like, "I have two things to say to you.  First, I realize that editing work records to cover up undone work is not accepted here.  And second, I'm reminding you that you can check this sort of thing yourself -and alphabetically, that would suggest that you'd start with Bob."
  • Thank you all for the advice.  I did do what most of you suggested and went to the bosses (not the one who has it out for Bob).  The situation still sucks but I know I did the only thing I could do in the situation.  I also made sure the problem was fixed and took responsibility for not double-checking Bob's work.  I also got a confirmation from both bosses that it is not my job to double-check everything Bob does, but I will going forward anyway.
