how many place settings?

When registering for china and casual dinnerware, how many sets do you register for? It's just me and my fiance. What if you just do a casual china that can be dressed up?

Like PP we only registered for all white Villeroy and Boch dishes that can be dressed up or every day. We registered for 8 sets.

We registered for Fiesta for everyday and Kate Spade by Lenox for fine china.  We did 12 place settings of each.  I did 12 of the fine china because we have a big family, so we may even end up needing more place settings (my grandmom had 20!).  I did 12 of the everyday so we can just load up the dishwasher without having to run it every day.  Also for if we have some friends over for a more casual dinner or lunch.
  • We're registering at Crate & Barrel and Macy's. I'm thinking if I just do a more casual china that can be dressed up I should do more. His family is big where as mine is small..

  • We just did a simple, nice everyday setting from WS that could be dressed up for holidays. We registered for 8 place settings, but we both have tiny immediate families. For most people I think 12 would be better.
  • For everyday, I like having 12 placesettings. It keeps you from having to constantly wash dishes. For formal china, I'm ok having 8, because that's the most we could fit at our dining table.

  • We did 8 for our formal Waterford china, and 10 for our Crate & Barrel everyday china.  I really wish we did 12 for the everyday though, I feel like I run the dishwasher too often for DH and I.  Eventually I'll buy two more settings.

  • Are you planning on entertaining a lot? Having formal, or more informal, holidays? You need to think about what kind of use you will be having now and in the future to decide.
We personally registered and received 18 sets of the hotel collection from Macys and 8 sets of a formal Noritake china set. I also have another set of formal china that I inherited. I wanted to have formal sets for both my daughters to inherit one. I will be purchasing a few more sets of the hotel collection as we both have large families and hold Sunday dinner at our home often.

12 is standard.  You can get by with 8 for formal settings if you have small families or don't entertain often.  My mother never needed more than 8 place settings of her formal because I'm an only child and both my parents' families live 1,000 miles away.  We hardly ever had more than 5 or 6 people total (us plus family friends) for Thanksgiving, etc.  H and I needed 12 place settings because he has 2 siblings (1 married) and both sets of parents live within 2 hours of us.  If we ever host Thanksgiving with just immediate family, we'll need 9 to start with.

  • I only registered for 8. We'll be living in a small apartment. The place setting we registered for has a dinner plate and a salad plate, so that's already 16 plates. I can't imagine fitting 4 more place settings in our tiny apartment with limited cabinet space.

See, same with us. I just know that I would love to host dinners when we get a house and so now is the time to register for the china! But I really fell in love with a nice causal china set that I'd mostly like to use more often as well. I guess I felt weird at first registering for so many place settings when it's just us two at first. I registered for 12 more elegant place settings and 12 casual plates that I can mix and match with.
  • We registered for the Hotel Collection Bone China and we are doing 8 sets.  If we feel like we need more, then we will register for one more set, since the set chose comes with 4, and then the extras that don't come in a set, we will register for 4 more individual pieces of each extra item to complete the set.

We're registered for every day dinner sets that come in sets of 4 and we've registered for 2 sets (8 total settings) and currently have 8 settings of fine china.  I'll watch it leading up to the shower and the wedding and add on 4 more if I see it's being bought up so we can have a full set of 12.

  • Thank you so much for all your input! This definitely helped me.
  • We did 10 for formal china and 12 for everyday dishes.

In general I would say 12 or so of everything, but you may want more if you are clumsy or have a big family.

We did 12 settings of casual china and 10 settings for fine china.
  • We registered for 12, and my aunt told me there was no way I was going to get all of them.  My shower is on Sunday and all 12 have been fulfilled!  The supplemental bowls and plates aren't fully fulfilled, but hey at least I got all 12 main sets.
  • I just registered for 12 place settings of bone china (plain white so I can use them everyday).  I have 8 place settings now and there are times where I need more.

  • We registered for 16 every day and 12 formal, although I'm hoping to get more formal place settings in the future. We don't come from large families, but even if it's just the two of us, both sets of parents, both of our brothers and spouses, and 2 children of our own, that's 12 right there. The 16 everyday is because I cook constantly and go through a lot of dishes, lol.

  • I was told to register for 16 from my one friend... but our every day is our "fine" china.. so it works.

  • I have had family and friends that registered for 8 or 12 place settings, and didn't get them all. My fiancé and I are looking for a set, where everything comes in one box to avoid getting all of the "missing" place settings ourselves.

Has anyone personally run into this problem?

  • I registered for 16, but I have a huge immediate family. I received 12 of them and bought the rest through completion.

IMHO on fine china - I think it is good to register for them bc most couples wouldn't go out and buy a full set themselves later. I chose a classic design that have been around for a long time - to ensure I don't outgrow it and it is more likely to stay in production. Choose a pattern that goes on sale - Macy's has 50% off my Lennox pattern at least twice a year. This is why I think I received more of my place setting than my brother did - he selected a Waterford pattern that rarely is more than 20% off. I chose plain white with a platinum band and accent plates. I can always buy different accent plates to change the style or holiday or seasonal ones.

*Disclaimer -- I love china - I have mine, my grandma's and a set of Christmas china.
