How early should I get my hair done?

Hello! I don't know a whole lot about hair, so I have a quick question. I'm having a friend that I grew up with do my hair for my wedding. She is a hair stylist and is really great. However, she lives in my hometown which is 45-50 minutes away from my wedding site. The day of my wedding I am driving my mom and my aunt to the Farmer's market to get my flowers. The farmer's market is about 1 hr away from my home, a little bit past the venue. I will hopefully not be driving all the way back to my hometown afterwards--just driving to the venue to start the day. However, I'm not sure when to get my hair done, then. Should I get it done really early in the morning before I go to the farmer's market? Will it stay in all day and all night? I'm worried it's going to give me a headache, but I don't want to drive back to my hometown after the farmer's market. My hair stylist is invited to the wedding, would it be rude of me to ask her to come early and do my hair on site? I feel bad asking her to come so early since she is a guest (and I'm not paying for any of my BMs hair) but maybe I'm over thinking this lol and she wouldn't mind? What would you do?

  • I got my hair done at 8:30 am for my 6pm wedding.  It took 3 people to take it out at 3 am the next morning.  It will stay all day. Just use a lot of hairspray.

  • Ditto Hoboken.  I got mine done around 8am for 6pm ceremony and it lasted all day and night.  I brought a curling iron in case I had to touch up the ends but it held no problem.  I had a hard time getting all the hidden bobby pins out at 2am.
  • Great, thanks!!

  • What is your day of schedule like?  Personally, that sounds like a LOT of driving on one of the busiest days of your life that should also be enjoyable.  And ask her to do your hair on site.  Tell her lunch/starbucks/gas (whatever) is  on you.  Also talk to you photographer, if you are having one.  They will likely have an idea of at least when you need to be done and you can ask your friend how long it will take and work from there.  But I would try to stay in one place as much as humanly possible!
  • Thanks! :) After much discussion my mom and I decided to buy wholesale flowers instead of the farmer's market ones because of the driving issue. I think it will work out so much better picking my flowers up on Thursday and then I can just focus on hair/makeup/etc on my wedding day.

  • You may want to consider getting it done for a trial run long before the wedding. Run around for the day, do your regular errands, and drive around the way you would in your car the day of your wedding. It may also depend on what specific style you're getting and the season of your wedding as well. Low hanging curls in the middle of summer vs. tight updo in the middle of winter are going to be two different ball games.

  • My appointment starts at 10am our ceremony is 5:30pm. We will be doing pictures before ceremony so that's was factored in.
  • Ahhh!  These responses scare me!  My ceremony is at noon!  Now I'm not sure what time to get my hair done!  I was hoping 9 or 10am would be enough time!

<div>If you're not doing pictures before the ceremony then having your hair done at 9am should be plenty of time. Just ask your hair person how long it will take too.</div>
  • I am getting my hair done at 8am and my ceremony is not until 4pm. Also, we are doing our pictures before the ceremony. So you will totally be fine time wise. But if you're worried about headaches, I would do a trial run and keep it in all day and see how you feel. Keep advil somewhere close by if it does give you headaches. Good luck! :)

  • I agree with all of the others. In this case earlier is better than later, and plenty of bobby pins and hair spray should keep you covered. But yes I also think you should do a trial run maybe a few weeks beforehand. This would also be good in case you THOUGHT you knew what style hair you wanted, but maybe it just doesn't look the way you wanted it to. This would give you and your stylist time to fine tune it and change it if need be.
