When to go bridesmaid dress shopping?

I have a BM who is pregnant and she is due 4 months before the wedding so I'm not sure if she will want to shop while she's 8 months pregnant or if that will even be possible, but if we don't go while she's pregnant then we will pretty much have to shop right after the baby is born. I don't know how bridal salons handle the measurements and sizing for a situation like that. She is very healthy and into fitness so I'm sure she will want to get back in shape after the baby is born, but what if she doesn't? I just don't want her to get a dress that's the wrong size and have to pay a bunch for alterations.

Re: When to go bridesmaid dress shopping?

  • Why don't you ask her what she is comfortable with?

I think you should just pick a color and she can find something off the rack.
  • Sorry I should have added that I'm going to pay for the BM dresses so we would still need to coordinate something together so I could pay for it.

I can ask her what she's comfortable with, but she'll just say whenever I want to go is fine. I was hoping to get some input from people who had BM's that were pregnant and how it worked out for them with sizing.

  • I would say when you order a dress for this BM have her order a dress a size or two bigger then she normally would wear pre-pregnancy.  I know she would want to get back into pre-baby shape but you never know what the body is going to do.  It is always easier to take in the dress then to let it out and having the extra sizing could be beneficial.

  • I would pick an A line dress for her, that way only her breast size really needs to be measured, her pregnancy boobs should be about the same size after baby comes, if she is breastfeeding.  I was measured for a BM dress when i was pregnant, i was all boobs and belly, was a size 8 when pregnant and only had to take the A line dress in a little bit because of my boobs.
  • Thanks ladies! Those are some great ideas.

  • She won't need a maternity dress though. She will have already had the baby. It's just that she'll either be very pregnant or have just had the baby when we go shopping.
