Officiants?

My fiance and I are in the search for an officiant.  The Knot only has three officiants listed for my area.  How does one go about finding an officiant?  We are not getting married in a church, we're having a secular wedding, we are currently relocated to a different state so I have to plan from afar making things difficult.  The officiant that I spoke to on the telephone was extremely nice and came highly recommended by our venue.  However I am not sure how much officiants typically are.  She charges 625.00.  If we have a rehearsal, there is an added fee of 150.00.  I looked at the other individuals The Knot has and they all run about the same.  Does anyone know if this is typical or are there any resources I can go/look to for information on finding an officiant?  Im going to look in the board for my location as well.  This post was pretty much for general answers and/or the pricing question.

Re: Officiants?

  • I'm not sure how much I can help; FI and I are having our parish priest marry us.

Try googling and see if you can find JOPs for the area. Also, try your local board; ladies there will have good advice.

  • I Googled for one before deciding to go with the husband of a colleague. There were tons of them listed.

  • Google.  Officiants have websites set up talking about what they offer, like any other business.

I'd definitely recommend an online search. Google 'officiant' and your state, then try again with the city or town you're getting married in. Check to see if your wedding venue, or other venues nearby have links on their websites to wedding vendors that they recommend. This is how I found our officiant. If you still need more help then phone your venue or any of the vendors that you already have booked and ask if they could recommend anyone. You can also ask friends/family who live in that area if they have any recommendations.

Our officiant cost us between $400-$500 altogether. We're not doing a rehearsal but there would have been an additional charge if we required our officiant to be there for a rehearsal.

  • I'm late to this thread, but my brother is marrying us. For FI and me, having someone we know be the officiant was really important and neither of us a is a regular church-goer, so we didn't have a minister we knew. I know it varies by state, but in VA, it cost $52 to get my brother licensed through the local court. Weirdly enough, my brother had already gotten certified through the Universal Life Church online (weird because he was never asked to perform any weddings until last year, when FI and I asked him...), so I'm not sure if that cost him anything, but I doubt it's much. I think we'll be getting him a small gift, but otherwise the $52 to the court was it. If money is a factor - I'm not saying it is for you and it wasn't for us - but if it is, having a friend or relative perform the ceremony is a good option.
