GoT?

what did you think of the finale?

Re: GoT?

  • You know, I didn't realize until about a week ago that GoT = Game of Thrones.  I thought you all were talking about some show pronounced "goatee."

  • Bright spots:  Jamie making it home, Cersei's speech about having children, Arya going to town on the dude who was talking about killing Catelyn and Robb, Arya and the Hound's relationship, Tywin handing Joffrey the ultimate 'ho sit down' (I seriously snorted when he told him to go to bed), Davos freeing Gendry and still living, Yara going for Theon

Meh: the final moment, Bran and Sam's meeting, Gilly annoys me to no end.

  • It was ok. It wasn't as exciting as the prior week but I don't think the world could handle that level of excitement 2 weeks in a row.

In some ways, last weeks woul dhave been a better season finale--except that then we'd be worried they'd have cancelled it because they offed all the characters.

I loved "tell me next time you do something like that" instead of "don't do stuff like that" w/ Arya and the hound.

  • I loved that moment too, @GBCK.

It was total MFEO moment for them.
  •  Tywin handing Joffrey the ultimate 'ho sit down'

    that was my favorite part.

at the beginning of the season, I thought that the red wedding would be the finale - and I love the way they played that out.

I'm happy that they chose not to follow up immediately with Joffrey's wedding - I thought book 4 was lacking, so I'm happy they'll be extending book 3 into season 4.

I agree with all of this. The Hound was one of my favorite characters in the books. I haven't been impressed with him so far but he was great with Arya. Yara was pretty bad@ss too. Tywin vs Joffrey was awesome. I also loved Tyrion's threat to Joffrey.

I died when I saw the wolf's head on Robb's body. Ugh. I felt bad for Ygritte too. Jon could not believe she shot him, but he knew she wouldn't kill him. If he hadn't gotten away, I'm sure she would have nursed him back to health.

I'm singing "CAAAAAVVVVVEEEE SEXXXXXXX" in my head right now...
  • I don't watch this show, but have been hearing so much about the episode from last week. What made it so shocking?

  • NOLA, basically even though George R.R. Martin is known for killing off the main characters of his series, he killed off a main character that the traditional set-up would've built the ongoing story around (the son of the disposed king) in a very very very violent and shocking manner as well as some other minor, yet important to the main character, people.

  • @NOLABridesmaid  - several of the main characters were lured to a wedding under false pretenses and were murdered in an incredibly gruesome scene. (young queen (pregnant) stabbed repeatedly in the stomach, young king stabbed by one of his bannermen, mother of king killed the wife of the man who planned the murder ( slit her throat) and then had her throat slit in return) "Pet" wolf of the king was killed in his cage.

These are characters who were seen as "heroes" so the fact that they were betrayed and killed was seen as a big shocker by anyone who had not read the books.

They did change a bit from the books (killing the pregnant woman - she wasn't there), but it was close.

That has pretty much been the format for all 3 seasons.
Episode 9 is the big finale and Episode 10 is the forthcoming for next season.

Season 1: Episode 9, Ned is beheaded. Episode 10 was the aftermath.

Season 2: Episode 9, Battle of Black Water. Episode 10 see above.

Season 3: Episode 9, Red Wedding. Episode 10 same thing.

The problem with this season's finale is that it is not the actual end of the third book, so at this point of the story in the books it is more like the middle. They dropped the ball in IMO, they should have introduced Stone Heart.

I am looking forward to next season, book 3 on general is probably the best of the series. I am also interested in how they plan on handling book 4. It is easily the worst of the series and almost feels like a spin off. The author introduces so many new characters it is almost annoying and I am not sure how well it will transfer on TV.

That makes sense--I guess since we caught up on seasons 1-2 during season 3, we didn't notice the breaking points so much.
  • Book 4 is also where I quit and, in discussion with friends, the nadir point so far of raping and pillaging.  So, I'm curious to see how HBO handles it.

I don't actually recall any rape scenes in book 4. The only one I can think of is one and is done in past tense to a non point of view character.

  • Ok. Thanks for the info.

The specific scene where I grew disgusted was another rape scene in the background, which happens quite often in these books.  They're in some village inn, eating (where once again grease was probably dribbling down someone's beard, don't get me starting on Martin's dearth of word skills) and there's an aside comment about 2 of the characters raping a wench in the background.  It wasn't the raping of a major character, so I'm sure lots of people didn't notice.  I'm just sensitive to the matter and Martin's use of rape as a scene element became too much and too casual for me to continue reading.

PLEASE NOTE: I don't care if other people are fine with it.  Kudos to you and keep on keepin' on.  I, for my own purposes only, didn't care to read it anymore. I also don't care that, "This is based on history, that's just how it was".  No, it's not based on history, it's a fantasy.  He could've put teeth in the womens' vaginas and it would've been an accepted fact, b/c it's a fantasy, just like whatever the monsters on the other side of the Wall really are.  Please carry on.
