Professional vs on the side photographer

Good morning

I am looking into a photographer for our wedding. I met a photographer at a local wedding show and really loved his style but not his price. We are on a budget and Im debating asking a friend that does photography on the side (read - for fun). I would ask our friend to come take some photos to see if his style suits us. (would only ask for new photos, not mention the wedding until we decide if we like his photos).

Just wondering if i should save a bit more and pay for the professional or give our friend a chance. Our wedding is quite laid back and as long as some of the photos turn out well, Im happy.

Has your friend offered his services for the wedding?  You don't want to ask and make him feel obligated.  Personally, I'd hire someone.  I don't like to mix friends with business.

I also think you pay for what you get.  For me, I was willing to pay.  It's a once in a lifetime event and I wanted quality photos by an experienced professional.
  • You can also look at it this way, when the times comes, would you be willing to sacrifice the friendship if the pictures don't turn the way you want? If not, hire the pro instead.  :-)
  • Go pro. If the photos don't turn out well, you can't redo it, AND you will end up ruining the friendship. It happened t a good friend of mine and she still cries about it.
