NER - Overpaid on postage for invites

I sent out the majority of our invitations out this past weekend (a little early, but people were asking for them and I didn't mind getting them out of the way) and was surprised that the post office lady said it would be $2.07 for each one. I knew it would be extra because they had to hand-cancel due to buttons being inside the invitations, but $2.07 seemed a little high. I asked her like three times if that's really how much it would be. After she said yes all three times and told me the process, she sold me stamps to mail off each one but never weighed them.

Today FI mailed off the last 4 invites (we still needed addresses for these 4) at a different post office and was only charged $.66 for each one after they were weighed. They were the exact same invitations - buttons and all. They only charged an extra 20 cents for the hand-cancel. I feel so ripped off now, as I overpaid by about $90. I don't even have the first receipt to attempt a refund (plus stamps are non-refundable) but just wanted to share in case anyone else is ever in the same situation. Always make sure your invitations are weighed and maybe even go to two different post offices to make sure the prices add up.

Re: NER - Overpaid on postage for invites

  • THIS HAPPENED TO US!

    Sort of.

I took an invite to the post office, weighed it, they said 86 cents.

Did this again a week later just to check, again 86 cents.

Bought 86 cent stamps and sent a sample to my mom JUST TO BE SURE, and it made it cross country just fine.

Then FI takes all of our invites to the post office, and they tried to say it was $2+ each! I freaked out.

So, my mom took her invite that she received back to the post office, and they said it should have been 66 cents.

I finally decided to just go with 86 cents, and luckily they all arrived just fine!

I handmade a good portion of my invites and the paper company in my town helped me put it all together.  The women warned me during our planning that things like thick ribbons or in your case buttons, may cause an extra charge at a post office.  She said there have been numerous brides that have gone to one post office and got one price and then other and got another price.

So advice to brides:  definitely go to two different post offices (if you can) if you have a heavier than average invite or if there is something that sticks up (like buttons), particularly if they tell you it will be very high postage!

And @emeejeeayen, had a good plan of mailing a test one if you get them far enough in advance to make sure that amount of postage gets there.

  • It's stuff like this that makes me feel like this is why the USPS is failing.
  • FYI, usps.com has this handy price calculator... With a digital kitchen scale we were able to get a good idea about what our invites weighed before we ever went to the post office. That comes in handy because you can always ask them what it weighs then do the math yourself and them ask them what the additional unexpected charges are for. i.e "So it weighs 1.8 oz so that is normally 66cents plus the 20 cents to hand cancel. That is 86 cents... what is the additional dollar for?"
  • Ugh, that's awful! While I wouldn't have agreed to that postage without having the invitations weighed (referring to OP), I almost can't believe this is such a problem for so many people! Wow.
