Tipping Question

I am having an open bar. The venue charges an automatic "service" charge on total bill of food, but obviously there is no separate "liquor" bill as it is all inclusive

The venue  wanted to do a "tip Jar" but I said "NO", so I need to tip the bartender at the end of night

How much is reasonable to tip the bartender for a 4 hour bar?

    Are you sure the bartender isn't tipped out of the service charge (like the servers are)? I would ask explicitly.

    I agree with mlg's questions, and ask your point of contact whether the service fee covers the staff's tips (including bartender). Mine does, but that's not always the case. Our staff is paid their regular wages using the venue's steep membership fees - it's a country club.

    We also had an open bar, and requested no tip jar. (There was an 18% gratuity built in)

    Apparently, BIL started a tip jar anyways and insisted that the bartenders leave it out! I never noticed...DH just told me the story yesterday when we were talking about our wedding. This is the first I've head of it and we've been married 10 months!

    @itzMS - how bizarre, why was he so insistent? I'm glad you didn't have to worry about dealing with it at the time...

    Loca, are you having a DOC? I've already told mine to confiscate any tip jars. I'm sure a several guests will still tip, as I do when I'm at weddings. I, personally, am more likely to tip when there's no jar out. I'm not sure if others are the same way.

    Apparently he felt guilty not tipping for his "free" drinks. Oh, well. :-)
