Caricatures

I LOVE caricatures.

Have you ever been to a wedding that had a caricature artist at the reception? (like in place of a photo booth)
If so, how did you feel about this?
If no, would you side-eye it? Think it's fun?

I think it would be fun I'm just having a really hard time imagining it. lol
What do y'all think?

Re: Caricatures

  • I'm not a fan. I haven't been to a wedding with a caricature artist at the reception, and I would not sit and be sketched if I had the option. Just not my thing at all.

We were actually considering this, just as something different from the photobooth. When we looked into it we learned that it takes about 5 minutes for a plain B&W drawing. We decided that it would be a waste of time and money with our large guest list.

  • I personally wouldn't use one if it were there, but I certainly wouldn't side eye it. I imagine a lot of people would probably enjoy it.

    This.
  • I didn't even consider how long each would take. I would be okay with only a few people wanting one but I would NOT be okay with guests wanting one but there not being time should they turn out to be a hit. I guest list may be a little too big for this.

    Thanks ladies!

  • I got proposed to by a caricature - so YEP I'm a fan! As for a wedding, I'm usually too busy dancing and eating to slow down and do a photo booth or a caricature.

  • I wouldn't side eye it but I wouldn't do it at my wedding or take advantage of it someone else's wedding. IMO - I'm there to dance, drink and have fun and I feel like it would take too much time.

That is awesome!  What a keepsake, huh?  My husband and I had one done at the local fair in 2003 (the summer we started dating.)  It still hangs on my living room wall 10 years later!!

OP, I think its a cute idea (in theory.)  The time it would take to draw each portrait, would be enough to sway me away from the idea.

  • I came very close to booking someone to do this at our wedding. They were digital though, not the chalk ones you see on a boardwalk.  The person did it on an ipad and you got a little 3x5 digital print at the end. They were super cute.    It was about $1500.00 to book for 3 hours, and when I realized he could only do about 12 people per hour, I decided to skip it.  36 people out of 130 guests... not good.
  • Thank you so much, ladies, for your thoughts!

I'm so disappointed but I suppose we'll be skipping it. lol I hate the idea of anyone waiting in line OR not being able to get one should they want one.

btw, @cwaggoner07 I can't even handle how cute your proposal must have been. Love it!

Wait, my friend had a fairly upscale wedding (not carnival themed). She had an artist there. We STILL talk about how awesome it was. I'm not even kidding a little bit. I'd have mine still if my ex wasn't part of the image.

I'd say it took about 5-10 mins for each drawing. There was a signup sheet with time slots. No lines! It was funny because even her 90 year old grandfather got up there. I believe everyone who was interested, got their drawing done. Several people went up as couples.

I believe she paid about $150/hour. It was going so well, they extended it beyond the original time they hired him for.

It was a blast. I highly suggest checking out to see rates for people in your area.

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.

  • Ohhhh @muppetfan do you have a guess of about how many people were there? I know you don't know her exact guest count but maybe a ballpark?

A sign-up sheet is so so smart!  I've only looked at one site so far but the average for most or the artists was $150-$175 per hour. I feel like that's definitely doable.

The average for speed was anywhere between 12 and 15 an hour. We're inviting 150 guests so I'm planning for that many but I'm thinking it'll be more like 100. (A lot are either out of country family that I don't really know or invites for the sake of my grandmother lol) So the math would be 48 to 60 guests getting one...

Like the other posters said not everyone is into it so I doubt everyone will want one, but is that enough?

  • I want to say maybe 150 people minimum (I know the venue minimum was 100). In my head anyway, her wedding was huge. She had 16 people in her wedding party between BMs and GMs alone.

Based on her wedding, one person did plenty for her size wedding. I believe everyone on the list was completed. It was mostly people under 30 getting it done, but we got a bunch of adults to sign up for funsies and it really was fun.

I say go for it. i get excited thinking about it.

  • @muppetfan I love you right now. lol Thank you soooo much for chiming in!

I was so disappointed but had kind of put the idea away.  I am definitely going to at the very least look more into it!

And thanks again to all you ladies for your input!

  • It's not my personal style, but I definitely wouldn't side-eye it at another person's wedding.

  • I've never been to a wedding with one, but our good friends recently did and they LOVED it. Worth checking into and it's pretty unique. I would try and get a spot if I was at a wedding with one.

  • yay!

See, these comments are why you don't need to make sure everyone's going to be able to do it. Not everyone's going to want to do it....not everyone did at my friend's wedding, but most people were enjoying the ones people came back to the table with even if they weren't interested in getting one.

I was elated with mine, someone told them we were getting married the following weekend (which was true) and hey drew a funny image of exH and I and he made me reallllly skinny which tickled me too.

  • I vote for having a caricature artist. It's not everyone's cuppa tea, but many of your guests will love it.

I went to a wedding that hired a balloon animal artist who went from table to table. By the time he got to us, though, he was almost at the end of his time and he could only make simple things (people kept bugging him to make really complicated things or to make giant balloon boobs or whatever.

I don't mind that they're not formal. If they help your guests have an awesome time, why not?

  • We are having about a hundred people at our wedding and having a short reception but I just absolutely had to have a caricature artist. so in order for us to make sure everyone is able to get one if they choose to we hired two artists and it was actually more reasonable than a Photo Booth. we found ours on gigmasters.com
  • Caricatures can go all wrong!
And I don't mean, that the artist may not be good- it's more that if people come dressed up to a wedding, they may not really represent themselves -and the caricaturist might just pick up the costume.
I have seen many caricatures of people I know well, and sadly a lot "miss the point". They just do not capture the essence of this person...

Fingers crossed no one shows up to my wedding in a costume. ;)

  • If you had a themed wedding - they shouldn't show up without ;)
  • I think it sounds like a blast. Ditto PPs recommendation that you have time slots and/or enough artists to attend to all your guests who would like to have it done.

It's a caricature. I don't think it has to really capture the essence of the person to be good.

I would seriously consider hiring two artists for the #of people on your guestlist.
