To My Nerds: I Need Comic Book Help

Okay, I broke down and bought 2 comics: The new X-men (b/c o their woman friendly approach that I wanted to support) and Ten Grand (b/c I didn't know B5 producer/writer wrote for comics and I love love love B5, so figured I'd like this and I was right).

Now I'm all curious.  Does anyone have any good recommendations for comics (preferably non-super hero, I probably won't stick with X-men after these 3 issues).

Re: To My Nerds: I Need Comic Book Help

  • New ones, or old favorites?

I ask because I just reread Black Orchid last night, and fell in love all over again.

hae you ever read any of Gaimen's "Sandman" comics?  They're *kinda* super-hero-y fantasy and can be INCREDIBLY dark--I'm not overly familiar w/ Ten Grand, but that's where I'd ponit you based on liking that.
(I am NOT an excellent comic person though)  I'd also point you to anything Dave McKean illustrated (although I don't think I've seen anything new by him in like 4 years)

(which, now I'm reading what Kuus said--Black Orchid was Gaimen/McKean :)

Kinda related, I'm really liking this but I think it's ONLY online right now:

  • @ReturnofKuus Both, please.

@GBCK, so I don't usually like Gaimen's books.  Do you think that would change with the comics?

I think his writing for the comics is a lot different than his 'normal' writing...but I know not everyone will agree w/ me on that.
I'd lend you my sandman graphic novels if you were closer, but you could skim through the 'look insides' on amazon and feel it out:  http://www.amazon.com/The-Sandman-Vol-Preludes-Nocturnes/dp/1401225756/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371144669&sr=8-1&keywords=sandman

thouht #2, which I shouldn't recommend because I haven't read it yet (sorry--I just got book 1 but haven't sat down w/ it yet), but have you read Maus?   Because I"m inclined to think you'd like it

  • His writing is a lot sharper for certain comics, IMO.  Give The Sandman a try (it's the best thing I've ever read), but be forewarned that the first two volumes are a little rough; the third is a collection of short stories where he really finds his voice, and then it really takes off from there.

I would also recommend his Black Orchid, which is a superhero comic that really subverts the genre by saying that violent men fighting injustice with more violence isn't really the only, or best, answer.

  • You've read Y: The Last Man, right?

  • Nope, this is my first foray into comic books/graphic novels.  I found the 2 local comic books shops and then we have Vintage Stocks.

I'll put these on my list, thanks ladies!
  • OH!

You need to read Watchmen, then.  Immediately.

HA, Kuus and I are sharing a brain, Watchmen can be VERY dark.  And sometimes it has more sexual violence than is very comfortable to read, but, it's worth reading, if only from a sociology standpoint (I know it's the 'go to' starting point for the lit profs here when they're delving into graphic novels)

I'll also recommend-with disclaimer, 'Marvel 1602'.  IT's...marvel in 1602.  It's *almost* satire of comic heros--so it might be better later in comics.

'Fables' is high on my list right now (to read, I've not read it enough to recommend)
I like 'MegaTokyo', but, read archives of it on the web to see if it appeals to you before dropping $ on the paper copies.
And I used to read 'Girl Genius', but I've gotten years and years behind on it.
  • I'm generally no help because I'm a manga reader rather than comics, but I second (and third) the recommendations for Sandman and Watchmen.

Anything Evangelion is my go-to for manga.

Awesome webcomics are Books of Adam, Hark! A Vagrant, Gunshow and (of course) Hyperbole and a Half.

  • I liked Marvel 1602, too!  But then, I am a Gaiman fan.

  •             I really dislike mainstream superhero comics so here are some things I read.
Fables-you really need to start with volume 1. This is about people from fairy tales and fables living in a suburb of New York after war has erupted in the world they live in.
       I second Y:The Last Man.
Mouse Guard-this is an all-ages thing about mice living in medieval times in their cities.
Saga: An Sf thing about interstellar war.
What kinds of things do you like to read? I can give some more direction with that.

  • I'm not particularly interested in the superhero stuff.  I bought the X-men b/c it was the all-woman team and I just wanted to support the efforts.

Another website recommended Mouse Guard as well, I might check that one out.

I tend to like Sci-Fi "light", by which I mean not the hard core stuff like Greg Bear or Asimov (though I can do the Foundation Series and I, Robot where he focused more on the interaction of science and humanity).  At this point when it comes to fantasy, I'm solidly out of anything that smells of high fantasy or medieval.  Give me the New Weird writers like China Mieville and I'm very happy.  I also really enjoy dystopian stories and I'll try nearly anything that's sci-fi and female driven.

The art is VERY important to me.  If I don't find it drawn or colored well, I will check out quickly.  The X-men was okay, mainly b/c their layouts are appealing and the coloring was really really outstanding.  The 10 Grand is gorgeous dark artwork that's the very simply but messily drawn and colored so that everything is a little murky, but it goes with the story.

  •   @Varuna, I think you'd probably like Saga a lot then.
Also, China Mieville did a run on a comic called Dial H for Hero, which if you like his work you should pick up.
Paul Cornell's Saucer Country is another one you might like a lot. It's 2 volumes right now and it's really good. Sidenote-I think you'd like his new novel London Falling as well.
Part of why I love Fables is the art-it's gorgeous.
The Massive is interesting I think.
Mouse Guard isn't really fantasy other than the animal element. It's just really charming and I love the art of that too.
I saw you said you loved B5-did you get to go to the 20th anniversary thing?

  • I'm more of a graphic novels girl... some of my favorites include the Blade of the Immortal series (Samurai story, lots of sexualized violence) and Ghost World (Pretty tame, story about high school girls having existential turmoil).

  • @zizibet You stay and thank you, very much.  :)  I had no idea China Mieville did a comic.  If it's even half as delicious as his writing (or UnLondon, which I liked), I'll be very happy indeed.  I didn't know about the 20th anniversary thing.  I keep meaning to rewatch it now that it's on Netflix.  I ordered the VHS videos, 1-2 per month until I had the whole series, back in the day.  I don't think sci-fi like BSG could've come into existence w/out it.

I haven't heard of Paul Cornell, I'll check him out.

Thanks to everyone who posted, I have a really great list to start out with now.  Very very many thanks.
  • YW.
At Phoenix Comicon a few weeks ago they did a big 20th anniversary reunion thing. Bruce Boxleitner had to cancel due to filming, but all the other living actors were there, as well as JMS.
Here's a link to the big reunion panle they did

I'm *obsessed* with Sandman. Just bought the third one, actually. Neil Gaiman in general I love, but Sandman definitely struck something with me.

That's because it is the best thing ever to have been written.

Gaiman is rather polarizing...I'm a fan though :)
I own all the sandmans, but I need to buy "city of angels" :)
