Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Re: cancel

  • What CMGr said.  Yes churches can be beautiful and cute and what not but they should not just be used for a pretty backdrop for pictures.  Doing so is very offensive to the members of the church and their religion.

You also shouldn't join a church just because you think it is pretty and would be good for your wedding.  When joining a church it should be because you like their ideals and the congregation.

    it depends on your location.

while some churches may take offense to being "used" as a venue...some churches are accustomed to this (especially in tourist locations, etc) and openly welcome it as long as you are of the same faith and are a member in good standing in a home church.

ask on your local board for pointers...or on the board of the location if it is a destination type of situation.

Trust me, most churches in St. Louis wont just let you use them as a pretty backdrop. Nor should they. I agree with the above PP's on that point.

OP look at Old Peace Chapel in Defiance. It's an old chapel used purely for wedding services.

Ok then why don't you just go to a say, catholic church, and when they ask you why you want to get married there tell them that it is just because it will provide you with pretty pictures and just see how accustomed and ok they are with that.  But it is all good because you know you are catholic just like they are.

I'm sorry, I am not that religious, but I even know that using a church just for its looks is a horribly offensive thing to do.

  • A friend of mine got married in a church of a different denomination because it was prettier. It just felt wrong and was a little offensive. Some churches are fine with renting the building out, others are not. You'll just have to search around.

    TO CLARIFY:

I know nothing about the St. Louis area...but I live in Southern NJ.  Shore town churches have weddings on a regular basis here...and the majority of the time the individuals getting married are NOT from that church.   Just like we don't turn away individuals that come for services during the summer...churches won't turn away a bride/groom who want to have a church wedding in a town outside their home church.

If you a member of good standing in a home church of the same denomination...and you are looking to get married in a location that is NOT your home church/area...I see nothing wrong with picking a different church to get married in.  It is welcomed by many churches here just like we welcome individuals to come to services when they are in town on vacations, etc.

If you are looking for a church based SOLELY on the appearance of the facility then THAT is tacky and offensive and I agree with the PP on that point.

  • I've always wanted to get married in a little white country church but don't know how to go about looking for one near St.Louis

Instead, do you mean you're looking for a little white (possibly country) CHAPEL in the St. Louis area?

THIS.  OP, I think you're talking about a wedding chapel, not a church.
  • FI and are getting married in another town (2.5 hours from where we live). We wanted to get married in a church but we obviously weren't members anywhere. He's Catholic, I'm Methodist. My parents are from that town, so we looked at the Methodist church where they were married. We also looked at Catholic churches for FI, but there were so many hoops for me to jump through (because I'm not Catholic) to get married there that it wasn't worth it. We did NOT, however, look for churches because they were "pretty" or "convenient". If you want to get married in a church and you're from OOT, choose it based on your religious affiliation and make sure the priest/father/pastor is ok with it - otherwise you risk offending the congregation.

We ended up choosing neutral territory. We're getting married outside in a city park. We're both really excited and it was the right choice for us. You could also look into community centers or other spaces for rent in the countryside and make them as pretty as you want.

I would also point out that in order to find a "country" building of any sort, one generally needs to be in the country, and St. Louis is far from country.
I took it to mean Metro Area, which definitely includes patches of country-ish looking areas. St. Louis is very spread out. But yeah, if she's talking city, she's SOL.

Yes, but "little country churches" usually don't have reception accomodations or a ton of hotels nearby.  So, I assume that OP is wanting something within 20 minutes of reasonable accomodations and reception venues.  Which isn't going to be country anywhere in the Metro area that I have traveled.
You'd be surprised actually. Chesterfield, St. Charles, St. Peters, and Defiance (where the chapel I mentioned is located) all have a decent amount of accommodation and facilities but can look very countryish. But then you're about 45 minutes or so from downtown, without traffic.

I grew up in St. Charles, but my STL county friends like to tell me I didn't grow up in a real city because there are fields and woods nearby haha.

  • I am sorry for the confusion, yes, I meant a chapel
