Arriving to reception on Horseback!

I want to ride down our tree line driveway to our tented reception on horseback! How, can we make this happen, any thoughts?

Re: Arriving to reception on Horseback!

  • First question...do you own your own horse and have access to a truck and trailer to transport your animal?..if not you can see if there are any livery stables in your area that rent horses out...off the property..this I doudt because insurance rates are extremely high .especially if you dont know how to ride..I would suggest hiring a horse and carriage that specializing in weddings. .that is the easiest safest and cost effective thing to do
  • Yeah, you're going to have to make some calls to local stables to find out who will rent you a horse and how.  Would you just be using it for the five-minute ride down the driveway, or would you go for a ride during cocktail hour?  It seems like a lot of work to bring the horse to the site, saddle up, etc, all for a grand entrance that may last one minute.  Definitely get a quote from anyone willing to rent you a horse, as they're going to want to charge a lot for all their time spent transporting the horse and getting it ready for you.
  • Using animals such as horses and elephants for wedding entrances are more common in East Indian weddings. Perhaps you might want to Google some sites specializing in those types of wedding to see how they deal with all the details of using an animal in your entrance. Sounds fun! Hope you can pull it off!
  • I know I'm a little late to this, but, I had wanted to incorporate my own horses into my wedding, but, for a multitude of reasons, I'm not.

One, horses are unpredictable.  If you're not a good rider, you can get hurt.  Most typical wedding dresses are big, and "floofy".  All of that flapping can cause a horse to spook, causing you to get hurt.  Most stables that rent horses, for insurance and liability reasons will have you sign a "No Fault" contract, as well as require you to wear a helmet.  Horses crap and pee, both of which can splatter; do you want that on your dress or on your groom or on your guests?

Now, I've seen some AWESOME "Trash the Dress" photos of women who are riders who saddle up wearing their gown and don't care if it gets ripped or torn or messed up.  But, between the logistics of hauling, of how dirty they are, the potential mess, the potential harm that could come to me and my guests, I decided that my horses are staying home for my wedding where they will be happier, and I'll take some nice photos with them at another time.

Now, I did know a lady who rented out her perlino (think gleaming white, not a dark hair at ALL on the horse) mare for Indian weddings.  It seems like I recall her saying such a thing was either tradition or good luck, but she led the horse on a lead line so the rider wouldn't get hurt.

There are people who do get married on horseback (I've had friends do it, but they owned the horses, and she's a riding instructor and he's a professional stuntman who grew up on horseback), so it's always a possibility, but...for lots of reasons, sometimes it's better to just not include animals in one's wedding.  Especially large ones with the capability of hurting people on accident.
  • 100% agree with Shayla, though it looks like this is an old thread. I am an avid horsewoman and was training professionally for a while, and while my horse means the world to me, it isn't feasible to have her in the wedding. It would be a downright bad idea for someone that isn't experienced with horses.

For one, my fiance doesn't ride and it would be weird IMO for me to be on horseback when he isn't. For two, weddings are crazy looking to your average horse and there aren't many that will take a huge crowd with tulle and all sorts of crazy ish in stride. For three, dresses. It can be done, but you will probably have to either alter your dress or ride sidesaddle, which isn't easy. Not many people know how to, myself included.

Then what do you do with the horse before and after the wedding? Hand it off? Then what?

So I'm happy with sticking a horsey theme in here and there. I'll be wearing cowboy boots. I have a large horse tattoo on my shoulder. I'll do a trash the dress session with my horse later. But that'll have to do.

Renting a horse and carriage for the getaway "car" might be more feasible?
