Wedding Woes

again with the cackling.

i've gone back to reading "ask amy" and a few of letters have referenced some ingrate and $25 checks. i looked it up because i was curious, and it is awesome.

DEAR AMY: My teenage son just received a gift check from a relative for his birthday for a small amount -- $25. The aunt who sent the check is a single woman (no kids) and a doctor. My wife and I tried to explain to our son that some people are simply cheap and there is not much we can do about it. I decided to ask your opinion to see if I should say something to this aunt, send the check back to her or cash it. I don't want to sound spoiled, but the children always complain to me, and it's not worth the aggravation.AG

You're joking, right? ETA: I always read these and hope that they're MUD.

Some people are just so ungrateful.

  • What the what?

    What was Amy's response?

  • very thankful that my parents had more sense than this woman. what happened to "thank you"?

we weren't allowed to use a gift (cash check/spend money/use items) until we wrote a thank you note and/or called and thanked the person.
  • Ohmygosh. And this reminds me of a story from the weekend.
  • This completely stresses me out.   As many of you know - my husband has been unemployed for over 6 months and we are B-R-O-K-E.   A few weekends ago, I had a HS graduation party to go to for my cousin's son.   Said cousin has been to every grad party, shower, etc. for me since the beginning of time.  Her son - well, I don't think I've seen him at a family event for 5 or 6 years.  Bottom line is, it was tough to decide what to do, but decided that the most I could afford was a card and $10.   I felt awful, but it is what it is.  :(

WOW! I love reading things like this. Very validating as to what I DID DO RIGHT! btw...I was lucky if I ever got a bday card! Geez!

@AuntFlo..there really is meaning to the saying "its what behind the gift that matters." You were thoughtful, kind and generous.
