Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Vows?

My soon to be husband has been talking about how he has been thinking about his vows and he has an idea about what he wants to say...me on the other hand NO CLUE! We are getting married in the traditional sense of a religious ceremony, in a church, etc etc... Do we just do the traditional vows that is spoken in churches? He has talked about writing his own vows...what exactly is that?? I have been to weddings where people say how much they love eachother, how they are their whole world but no actual vows or promises are made...am I completely out of the loop in this whole ceremony thing?

Re: Vows?

  • You should check with the church and pastor/priest that is marrying you. Sometimes the church or individual pastor will dictate what type of vows are allowed. FI's church requires us to pick from 3 accepted ceremony versions containing traditional vows (which is more than fine with both of us). Some states also require that certain phrases must be said in order for the marriage to be legally binding.

I personally love the traditional vows, but it's a very personal decision.

Writing your own vows means exactly that - but I agree, many times self-written vows end up awkward because it turns into a love letter more than actual vows someone is making to their spouse. I think it's best when personal vows are a mix of declarations and promises.
